How to Use the Tiefling Name Generator

- Choose female, male or any tiefling names.
- Pick infernal, virtue, infernal house or human-raised names.
- Tick to describe horns, eyes and skin.
- Read your tiefling name and look. Copy it or tap the star to save it.
Choose Female, Male or Any, then pick a name type: Infernal name, Virtue name, Infernal house, or Raised among humans. Keep Any type to see a mix. Press Generate for a new list. Virtue names have no gender, so they appear whichever option you choose.
With the description box ticked, every name comes with a look: the shape of the horns, the color of the eyes and the tone of the skin. That gives you a character portrait in one line, ready for a character sheet or the first page of a story. Click any name to copy it, or tap the star to keep it.
The Four Kinds of Tiefling Names
| Name type | What it says about the character | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Infernal name | Embraces the fiendish bloodline | Zarithra, Nemiros, Vexoth |
| Virtue name | Chose a word to live by, or to escape | Ardent, Clemency, Requiem |
| Infernal house | Belongs to an old infernal family | Zaressa of House Duskhorn |
| Raised among humans | Grew up with an ordinary family | Hester Blackwell, Silas Crane |
Infernal names join 18 original opening syllables with separate endings for feminine and masculine names. Feminine endings such as -ithra, -essa and -ixa flow, while masculine endings such as -oth, -iros and -akos sound harder. Every infernal name was checked so that the generator does not repeat the sample names printed in popular game rulebooks.
house names = 18 × 14 × 12 houses = 3,024 per gender
Across all four types and both genders the generator can make 7,088 names. Names are drawn with your browser's secure random source, and no list repeats a name.
What Virtue Names Mean
Many fantasy settings describe tieflings who reject the names their families or their infernal heritage would give them. Instead, they choose a word: a quality they hope to have, a feeling that defines them, or an idea they cannot escape. A tiefling called Patience might be anything but patient, and one called Requiem may carry a grief no one else knows. The virtue list here uses original words, so your character's chosen name feels personal rather than taken from a rulebook. Pair a virtue name with a backstory moment: the day they chose it, and why.
Describing Your Tiefling
Tieflings often stand out in a crowd, so their look is part of their story. Horns can be curled like a ram's, swept back, or broken in some old fight. Eyes might be solid gold or glow like embers, and skin can range from human tones to crimson, violet or ash gray. The description option draws from eight choices for each feature, giving 512 combinations. Use it as a starting point, then add your own details, such as a tail with a silver ring or horns decorated with charms.
Tips for Naming a Tiefling
- Decide how they feel about their heritage. A tiefling proud of their bloodline might use an infernal name; one who wants to fit in may keep a human name.
- Use two names. Many characters have a birth name and a chosen name. Generate one of each and decide which one friends use.
- Let the house create rivals. If your character belongs to House Cindermarch, another house is probably their enemy.
- Read it aloud at the table. Your party will say the name every session, so pick one that is easy to pronounce.
- Check with your game master. Some campaign settings have their own naming customs for tieflings.
If you are building a whole family, generate an infernal house name first, then give siblings different name types. One may embrace the house name, another may choose a virtue name, and a third may use the human name their foster parents gave them.
Frequently asked questions
How do tieflings get their names?
Tieflings in fantasy settings often carry an infernal name tied to their bloodline, a human name from the family that raised them, or a virtue name they chose themselves to express a hope, an ideal or a burden.
What is a tiefling virtue name?
A virtue name is a single word a tiefling adopts as their name, such as Ardent, Clemency or Requiem. It might describe a goal, a feeling or a promise. The list here uses original words.
What are good female tiefling names?
Infernal names with flowing endings work well, such as Zarithra, Vesithra or Nemixa. Choose Female and the Infernal name type for a list, or try a virtue name for something unusual.
Are these names from official game books?
No. Every infernal name is built from original syllables, and the generator checks its output against sample names from popular rulebooks so they are not repeated. The virtue words are original choices too.
How many tiefling names can the generator make?
It can make 7,088 names across four types and both genders. Infernal house names are the largest group, with 3,024 combinations for each gender, because every name can join one of 12 houses.
Can the generator describe what my tiefling looks like?
Yes. Tick the description box and each name comes with horns, eye color and skin tone, such as curling ram horns, solid gold eyes and crimson skin. There are 512 combinations to choose from.
