How the Pirate Names Are Built
Every name joins a first name, a surname and often a nickname. The first names are 40 female and 40 male names that sound at home on an eighteenth century deck. The 40 surnames are plain, salty English family names. Each style has its own nicknames, from one-word names such as Saltbeard or Stormcrow to titles such as the Navigator.
+ first names × nicknames + first names × titles
For classic female names that is 40 × 25 × 40 + 40 × 25 + 40 × 15 = 41,600 combinations. Across every style and both genders the generator can make 229,200 different pirate names. Names are drawn with your browser's secure random source, and a list never repeats a name.
| Style | Pattern | Example |

Where Pirate Nicknames Come From
Pirates of the so-called Golden Age, roughly the late 1600s to the 1720s, often sailed under nicknames. Edward Teach became Blackbeard, and John Rackham was known as Calico Jack for his colorful clothes. A nickname could hide a real identity, warn a rival crew, or simply stick because of a habit, a scar or a famous moment. That is why the classic list mixes looks (Silvertooth), skills (the Navigator) and luck (the Unsinkable).
Ranks were real jobs on a pirate ship. The captain was usually elected by the crew, and the quartermaster handled discipline and shared out the loot. The bosun looked after the rigging and sails, the master gunner ran the cannons, and the sailing master navigated. Using a rank makes a name sound like a working crew member rather than a cartoon.
Tips for Choosing a Pirate Name
- Match the mood. A fearsome name suits a villain in a game or story. A funny name works better for a party, a classroom activity or a crew of children.
- Say it with a growl. Pirate names are meant to be shouted across a deck. Short first names and one or two syllable nicknames are easiest to call out.
- Use your own name. For costume parties and team events, a pirate name built on your real first name is easy for friends to remember.
- Keep the ship. A ship name gives a role-playing character a home port and a story hook.
Ways to Use Your Pirate Name
Pirate names are popular for International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19, costume parties, escape rooms, tabletop role-playing games and video game characters. Teachers use them for classroom treasure hunts, and families use them for birthday parties with a pirate theme. Generate one name for each guest, print them on name tags, and let the funniest nickname win a prize.
All names are invented combinations of common words and names. They are not taken from real historical pirates, so you can use them freely in games, stories and events.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my own pirate name?
Type your first name in the optional box and choose a style. The generator keeps your name and adds a pirate nickname, a surname or a crew rank, such as Sam "Saltbeard" Mercer or Bosun Sam Thorne.
What are good female pirate names?
Strong choices pair a classic first name with a vivid nickname, such as Grace "Stormeye" Lockhart or Morwenna the Tempest. Choose Female and the Classic or Fearsome style for names in that spirit.
What makes a pirate name sound fearsome?
Fearsome names use storms, darkness and sea monsters in the nickname, such as the Kraken or Black Squall, and keep the first name short and hard sounding, so it can be shouted across a deck.
How many pirate names can the generator make?
It can make 229,200 different names across all styles and both genders. Classic female names alone have 41,600 combinations, so you are unlikely to see the same name twice.
Are these names from real pirates?
No. The names are invented combinations of first names, surnames and nicknames written for this tool. Famous real nicknames like Blackbeard are left out, so your pirate name feels original.
Can I use these pirate names for a party or game?
Yes. The names are free to use for costume parties, Talk Like a Pirate Day, classroom treasure hunts, role-playing games and stories. Copy the whole list to make name tags for every guest.
