What Is a Headcanon?

A headcanon is a detail about a character that you believe or enjoy imagining, even though the original story never states it. Fans write headcanons about favorite characters, and writers use the same idea to deepen their own original characters (OCs). Good headcanons are small and specific: not "they are kind" but "they remember exactly how each friend takes their coffee." Specific details show a trait instead of naming it.

CategoryExample
Habits and quirksRobin chews on pen caps when they are thinking hard.
Food and drinkRobin bakes when they are stressed, so friends can tell a bad week by the amount of bread.
Friends and relationshipsRobin shows affection by quietly fixing things that are broken.
BackstoryRobin moved so often as a child that they still keep one bag packed.
Feelings and comfortRobin needs ten quiet minutes alone after any party.
SecretsRobin reads the last page of every book first.
Everyday lifeRobin sets five alarms and still sleeps through the first four.
Modern AUIn a modern AU, Robin is a night-shift baker who sleeps all day.

An AU, short for alternate universe, places a character in a different setting. A modern AU imagines a fantasy or historical character living in today's world, with a job, a phone and a favorite coffee order.

How Many Headcanons Can It Make?

There are 10 templates in each of the 8 categories. Many include a detail drawn from a short list, such as a comfort food, an animal or a hobby, which multiplies the variety.

headcanons = sum over templates of (choices for each detail in the template)

For example, "{name}'s comfort food is [food], made exactly the way their grandmother made it" has 12 foods, so it alone gives 12 headcanons. Across all categories there are 255 different headcanons for any one name and set of pronouns.

Tips for Using Headcanons

  • Keep what fits. A headcanon should feel true to the character. Skip any that clash with what you already know about them.
  • Turn details into scenes. "Cleans the kitchen when upset" becomes a scene where a friend finds them scrubbing a spotless counter at midnight.
  • Build a profile. Save five to ten favorites across different categories for a well-rounded character sheet.
  • Share and discuss. Headcanons make great prompts for fan communities, writing groups and role-play partners.

Turning Headcanons Into Writing

A single headcanon can carry a whole scene. Take "Robin rewatches the same comfort show when they cannot sleep" and ask what keeps them awake tonight, who walks in, and what the show means to them. Small habits also make dialogue feel real, because friends tease each other about exactly these quirks.

For original characters, headcanons fill in the gaps between big plot events. Write five, then look for a pattern: a character who keeps old letters, remembers birthdays and stays to clean up after parties is sentimental and loyal, even if the story never says so. Use that pattern to decide how they react under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What is a character headcanon?

A headcanon is a detail about a character that you imagine or believe, even though the original story never confirms it. Writers also use headcanons to add depth to their own original characters.

Can I use my own character's name?

Yes. Type any name of up to 30 characters and every headcanon uses it. Possessives are written correctly too, so you get Robin's for most names and James' for names ending in s.

Does the generator support they/them pronouns?

Yes. Choose they/them, she/her or he/him, and each headcanon adjusts the pronouns and the verbs that follow them, so sentences read naturally as "they are" or "she is" without any editing.

What is a modern AU headcanon?

AU means alternate universe. A modern AU headcanon imagines your character living in today's world, with a job, hobbies and everyday routines, even if they come from a fantasy or historical story.

How many headcanons can it generate?

There are 80 templates across 8 categories, and many include a random detail such as a food or hobby. Together they make 255 different headcanons for each name and pronoun choice.

Can I use these headcanons in fan fiction?

Yes. The headcanons are original sentences written for this tool, so you can use them freely in fan fiction, character sheets, role-play and your own stories.
