How to Use the Wood Elf Name Generator

- Choose female, male or any elf names.
- Pick an Elvish family name, a Common-tongue one, a grove or a given name.
- Tick to show what each name means.
- Read your elf name and its translation. Copy it or tap the star to save it.
Choose Female, Male or Any, then pick a name style: an Elvish family name, a Common-tongue family name, a grove the elf calls home, or the given name only. Press Generate for a new list of forest folk.
With the meaning box ticked, every name is translated. Lyrara means River Song, and Ithidris means Star Grove, so Lyrara Ithidris is River Song of the Star Grove. Click any name to copy it, or tap the star to keep it for your character sheet or your story's cast list.
A Small Invented Elvish
Most elf name generators string together pretty syllables that mean nothing. This one uses a tiny invented language instead, so each name can be read. There are 20 roots taken from the forest, eight feminine endings, eight masculine endings and six family endings. Every part has one meaning, and a name is simply a root followed by an ending.
| Part | Examples and meanings |
|---|---|
| Roots | Lyr river, Ori oak, Faen fox, Ithi star, Mae moss, Rhae rain, Thal glade, Ula owl |
| Feminine endings | -ara song, -ithe whisper, -essa light, -ys dancer, -wyn grace |
| Masculine endings | -an bow, -ric keeper, -as runner, -or warden, -vyr arrow |
| Family endings | -dris grove, -mael kin, -vaen path, -thir hollow, -lonn ring |
When a root ends in a vowel and the ending starts with one, the language adds an l to keep the name smooth: Dae (dawn) and -an (bow) become Daelan, Dawn Bow, and Mae (moss) and -essa (light) become Maelessa, Moss Light. The language was written for this tool, so it does not copy any author's Elvish.
How Many Names Are Possible
Elvish family names = 20 roots × 6 endings = 120
Combining 160 given names with 120 Elvish family names, 144 Common-tongue family names or 8 groves gives 43,680 names per gender and 87,360 in total. Names are picked with your browser's secure random source, and each list is free of repeats.
Elvish and Common-Tongue Family Names
Many fantasy worlds imagine elves using two names: one in their own language and one that other peoples can say. The Common-tongue style gives family names such as Mosswhisper, Briarwalker and Hazelbough, which sound natural in a human village or a tavern. The Elvish style keeps the family name in the invented language, so a party member might be known as Faenan Thalvaen among elves, which means Fox Bow of the Glade Path, and as Faenan Rowanshade to everyone else.
What Makes a Wood Elf
Wood elves, sometimes called forest or sylvan elves, are usually pictured as the wilder cousins of the high elves. They live among ancient trees, move silently, favor bows and stealth, and keep close ties with animals and the seasons. Their names should feel like the forest: soft consonants, flowing vowels, and meanings drawn from leaves, rivers, foxes and owls. That is why every root in this generator comes from the woodland.
Tips for Naming a Wood Elf
- Read the meaning first. Pick a name whose translation fits the character. A scout might be Faenas, Fox Runner, and a healer Elolia, Leaf Heart.
- Give them a grove. A home grove creates a place to return to, people to protect and a reason to leave.
- Use two names. Let the elf share a Common-tongue name with the party and reveal the Elvish name later, as a sign of trust.
- Keep families consistent. Siblings share a family name. Generate one, then create several given names to build a whole family.
- Write your own. Use the roots and endings in the table to compose names by hand, such as Ulalith, Owl Watcher.
Frequently asked questions
What do the elf names mean?
Each name is built from a small invented Elvish language. The root and ending each have one meaning, so Lyrara means River Song and Faenan means Fox Bow. Tick the meaning box to see every translation.
How do wood elf names work?
A wood elf name joins a forest root, such as Lyr for river or Ori for oak, with an ending, such as -ara for song or -an for bow. Family names add a second root with an ending like -dris, meaning grove.
What are good female wood elf names?
Feminine endings such as -ara, -essa, -lia and -wyn give names like Lyrara, Maelessa, Elolia and Faenwyn. Choose Female to see a full list with their meanings.
Is this Elvish from a book or game?
No. The language was invented for this tool, with its own roots and endings, so it does not copy any author's Elvish. Generated names are also checked against famous elves from books and games.
How many wood elf names can the generator make?
It can make 87,360 names across four styles and both genders. There are 160 given names for each gender, combined with 120 Elvish family names, 144 Common-tongue names or 8 groves.
Can I make my own elf name with this language?
Yes. Use the table of roots and endings to compose a name by hand. For example, Ula (owl) plus -ith (watcher) makes Ulalith, Owl Watcher, with a linking l, and Ithi (star) plus -dris (grove) makes Ithidris.
