How to use the random trivia generator

How to use the random trivia generator: choose a category, press Next question, then pick an answer
Numbered steps on the Random Trivia Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Pick a category such as science, history or Canada, or keep all categories.
  2. Press Next question to draw a random question.
  3. Tick host mode to show the answer right away when you read questions to a group.
  4. Choose an answer and see if you were right, with your score and best streak.

Pick a category, or play All categories for a general knowledge mix, and choose one of the four answers. The correct answer turns green, a wrong pick turns red, and your score, percentage and best streak update. Press Next question to continue. Scoring and odds

score % = correct answers ÷ questions answered × 100
chance of guessing one question right = 1 ÷ 4 = 25%
chance of guessing 5 in a row = (1 ÷ 4)5 = 1 in 1,024

For example, 12 correct out of 15 is 12 ÷ 15 = 80%. A player who only guessed would average about 25%, and the chance of a guessed streak of five is under 0.1%, so a long streak really does show knowledge. The answer positions are shuffled each time, so the correct answer is equally likely to be any of the four buttons.

How to host a trivia night

  1. Split players into teams of two to five and give each team paper and a pen.
  2. Play rounds of 10 questions, one category per round, with Host mode on.
  3. Read each question and its four options twice, and allow about 30 seconds per answer.
  4. Swap answer sheets between teams for marking, award one point per correct answer, and announce the scores after each round.
  5. Finish with a tiebreaker from the Words and numbers category if teams are level.

About the answers

Every answer was checked against widely accepted reference facts. Some facts depend on definitions: for example, Quebec is Canada's largest province, while the territory of Nunavut is larger still, and the blue whale is the largest animal known to have lived based on current evidence.
