How to Use the Pet Name Generator

How to use the pet name generator: choose pet type, gender and style, then save favorite names
Numbered steps on the Pet Name Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose the kind of pet: dog, cat, small pet, bird or fish.
  2. Switch to Two pets for matching name pairs.
  3. Pick a style such as cute, food, classic or funny.
  4. Read the top name, then copy it or star it for your shortlist.

Pick the kind of pet first: a dog, a cat, a rabbit or other small pet, a bird, or a fish or reptile. Then choose Girl, Boy or Either and a style such as Cute, Food, Classic people names, Funny, Nature or Mighty and mythic. Press Generate to shuffle a new list. The counter shows how many names match your choices, so you can see when a filter is narrow.

Getting two pets at once? Switch to Two pets for matching name pairs like Salt and Pepper or Sun and Moon. Click any name to copy it, or tap the star to save it. Favorites stay in this browser, which makes it easy to share a shortlist with your family and vote.

How the Name Lists Work

Every style has three lists: names that suit girls, names that suit boys, and names that work for either. Choosing Girl gives you the girl and either lists, choosing Boy gives you the boy and either lists, and Either gives you everything. Each kind of pet also adds about 20 names that fit it especially well, such as Barkley for a dog, Whiskers for a cat or Splash for a fish.

names to choose from = style names for your choice + names for the kind of pet (duplicates removed)

With every style, either gender and a dog selected, there are 315 names to choose from. All styles and all pet kinds together hold 378 different names, plus 40 pairs. Names are shuffled with your browser's secure random source and never repeat within a list.

How to Choose a Name Your Pet Will Learn

  • Keep it short. Animals respond best to names with one or two syllables. A long name like Duchess Fluffington is fun, but you will probably shorten it to Duchess or Fluff in daily use.
  • Make it distinct. Avoid names that sound like common commands. Kit sounds like sit, and Bo sounds like no, which can confuse a dog in training.
  • End with a clear sound. Names ending in a vowel sound, like Milo, Lulu or Kiki, are easy to call across a park.
  • Say it in public. You will shout this name at the vet, at the dog park and from the back door. Make sure you are happy to do that.
  • Think about the future. A tiny puppy named Peanut may grow into a large dog. Many owners love that contrast, but decide on purpose.

Ideas for Each Kind of Pet

Dogs often suit friendly people names and energetic words, which is why names like Max, Charlie and Scout stay popular. Cats lean toward elegant or playful names, from Mabel to Mittens. Small pets such as rabbits and hamsters suit soft, bouncy names like Nibbles and Hopscotch. Birds pair well with bright, musical names such as Kiwi, Banjo and Melody, and fish and reptiles get watery or scaly names like Splash, Gill and Iggy. If you share your home with more than one pet, try the pairs list or keep names in the same style, such as all food names.

Name Pairs for Two Pets

Pairs work well for littermates, bonded rabbits, two birds in one cage or a new pet joining an older one. Classic pairs come from food (Mac and Cheese), nature (Cedar and Pine) and famous duos (Holmes and Watson). Choose a pair where each name also stands alone, so you can call one pet without the other running over.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a name for my pet?

What are good names for a girl dog?

Popular, easy names for a girl dog include Bella, Daisy, Lucy, Molly, Rosie and Luna. Choose Dog and Girl in the generator to see many more, from cute to nature to classic people names.

Can I get names for two pets?

Yes. Switch to Two pets to see matching pairs such as Salt and Pepper, Sun and Moon, or Holmes and Watson. Each pair works as a set, and each name still works on its own.
