How to Use the Movie Title Generator

How to use the movie title generator: pick a genre, add a word, generate and save titles
Numbered steps on the Movie Title Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose a genre, or keep Any genre for a mix of nine.
  2. Optionally type a word to build every title around it.
  3. Press Generate titles for a fresh list.
  4. Read your top title and tagline. Copy it or star it to keep it.

Choose a genre, or keep Any genre for a mix, and press Generate titles. Each title comes with a short tagline, the line you would see under the title on a poster. Type a word in Include a word, such as Midnight or Harbor, and every title will be built around it, like Operation Midnight or Rise of the Harbor.

Click a title to copy it, tap the star to save it, or use Copy all for the whole list. Untick the tagline box if you only want titles. Favorites stay in this browser, so you can shortlist titles and compare them later.

How the Titles Are Built

Each genre has its own title patterns and word lists, based on how films in that genre are usually named. Action titles are short and punchy, horror titles hint at a place you should not enter, and family titles pair a friendly character name with a magical object.

GenrePatternExample
ActionOperation [code name]Operation Glass Tiger
HorrorIt Waits in the [place]It Waits in the Cellar
Science fiction[noun] [number]Colony 47
RomanceMeet Me in [place]Meet Me in Lisbon
ComedyHelp! My [relative] Is a [surprise]Help! My Grandma Is a Spy
ThrillerThe [noun] Next DoorThe Accomplice Next Door
Fantasy[noun] of [element]Throne of Embers
DramaAll the [adjective] [noun]All the Unspoken Things
Family[name] and the [adjective] [noun]Maple and the Runaway Kite

How Many Titles Are Possible?

titles = sum over patterns of (words in each slot multiplied together)

Worked example: the action pattern "[adjective] [noun]: [code name]" has 12 adjectives, 12 nouns and 8 code names, so it alone makes 12 × 12 × 8 = 1,152 titles. Across all nine genres the generator can make 4,712 titles, and the taglines add more variety on top. Titles are picked with your browser's secure random source, and a list never repeats a title.

What Makes a Good Movie Title

  • Signal the genre. Viewers should guess the kind of film from the title alone. "The Drowned Choir" cannot be a comedy.
  • Keep it short. Most memorable titles are one to four words, easy to say and easy to search.
  • Create a question. Titles like "It Waits in the Cellar" make people want to know what "it" is.
  • Check it is free. Search the title on a film database before you use it. Titles generally cannot be copyrighted, but a famous title can still cause confusion or trademark issues.
  • Say it out loud. Read it as a trailer voice-over would. If it sounds right, it probably is.

Ways to Use the Titles

Screenwriters and student filmmakers use generated titles as working titles or as prompts: pick a title you like and write the story it suggests. Game nights use them for improv and charades, teachers use them for creative writing tasks, and video creators use them to name short films and series. All titles are random combinations of common words, so any match with a real film is a coincidence.

Writing a Tagline That Works

A tagline sells the mood of a film in one breath. Good taglines are short, often under eight words, and they hint at the conflict without explaining it. Horror taglines warn, comedy taglines wink, and romance taglines promise a feeling. Each genre in this generator has its own set, so the tagline always matches the title's tone.

When you pick a title and tagline, read them together. They should add up to a clear promise, such as a creepy house and a warning not to turn off the lights. If they repeat the same idea, swap one of them for a line that adds new information, like a time limit or a twist.

Frequently asked questions

How does the movie title generator work?

Each genre has title patterns and word lists. The generator fills a random pattern with random words using a secure random source, adds a tagline, and never repeats a title in the same list.

Can I include my own word in the title?

Yes. Type a word in Include a word, such as Midnight, and every title is built around it, for example Operation Midnight or The Midnight Next Door.

What genres are available?

Action, horror, science fiction, romance, comedy, thriller, fantasy, drama and family or animation. Choose Any genre to mix them, and each title shows its genre.

Can I use a generated movie title for my film?

Usually yes. Film titles generally cannot be copyrighted, but check a film database first, because a well-known title can still cause confusion or a trademark issue.

What is a movie tagline?

A tagline is the short, catchy line printed on a poster under the title, such as "Magic always has a price." It hints at the story and the mood of the film.

How many movie titles can it make?

Across all nine genres the generator can make 4,712 different titles, and each comes with one of six taglines for its genre. Every list is drawn at random, so press Generate again for fresh ideas.
