How the Final Grade Calculator works: Know exactly what to aim for on the final before you start studying.

How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

How to use the final grade calculator: enter current grade, target grade and final weight to see the score needed.
Numbered steps on the Final Grade Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Enter your current grade in the course before the final exam.
  2. Enter the overall course grade you want to finish with.
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth as a percentage of the course.
  4. Read the exam score you need, then check the table for other letter grade targets.

Type your current grade as a percentage in the first box. This is the course grade you hold right now, before the final exam, as shown in your student portal or calculated from your marks.

Enter the grade you want in the second box, then the final exam weight from your syllabus. The desired grade can be any target, from a pass mark to an A, written as a percentage.

The result updates as you type. You see the exact exam score needed, a color-coded verdict on how realistic it is, and a table showing the score required for six common grade targets at once.

The Final Exam Grade Formula

Your course grade is a weighted average of the work already done and the upcoming final exam. If the final weight is w, the rest of the course carries a weight of 1 minus w.

Required score = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − w)) / w
Predicted grade = Current grade × (1 − w) + Exam score × w

Rearrange that weighted average equation to solve for the missing exam score. Subtract your current grade times the rest of the course weight from the target grade, then divide what remains by the final weight.

The same formula works in reverse as a predicted grade. Multiply your current grade by 1 minus w, add your expected exam score times w, and you get the course grade you would finish with.

Worked Example With Real Numbers

Take a worked example: your current grade is 78%, the final is worth 35%, and you want 80%. The rest of the course is worth exactly 65%, so 78 times 0.65 gives 50.7 course points.

Subtract 50.7 from 80 to get 29.3, then divide that by 0.35. The exam score needed is 83.7%, which the calculator labels as reachable with a solid exam rather than needing a near perfect one.

The table below repeats the sum for each letter grade target with the same inputs. The pass mark of 50% is already secured, while an A+ at 90% is out of reach through the final.

TargetExam score needed (78% now, final worth 35%)
A+ (90%)Not possible (112.3%)
A (85%)98.0%
A- (80%)83.7%
B- (70%)55.1%
C- (60%)26.6%

Finding Your Current Grade and Final Weight

Your current grade must be the weighted average of everything except the final exam. Look at the grading breakdown in your syllabus, which lists weighted categories such as homework, quizzes, assignments and the midterm exam.

If your instructor grades in points, divide the points you earned by the points available in each category first. Then use our grade calculator to combine the categories into one current percentage for the course.

The final exam weight is usually stated in the syllabus as a percentage, such as 25%, 35% or 50%. If a cumulative exam replaces a lower midterm, ask your instructor how that changes the weight.

Reading Your Result

A required score above 100% means the target is not reachable through the final alone. Ask whether your course offers extra credit, bonus marks, drops the lowest score, or allows a rewrite of one test.

  • Above 100%: not reachable with the final alone.
  • 90% to 100%: possible, but you need a very strong exam.
  • Between 0% and 90%: reachable with a solid exam.
  • Zero or below: already secured, even with 0% on the final.

A result between 90% and 100% is possible but demanding. Anything below 90% is reachable with a solid exam, and a result of zero or below means the grade is already secured before you write.

Use the tool for quick what-if checks. Change the target by a few points, or try a different weight if your instructor has not confirmed it yet, and watch how the exam score needed moves.

Letter Grade Targets and Grade Scales

The result table uses common targets: 90% for an A+, 85% for an A, 80% for an A-, 70% for a B-, 60% for a C-, and 50% to pass. These are useful grade milestones.

Grade scale cutoffs differ between schools and provinces. Many Canadian universities treat 50% as the pass mark, while many US schools use 60%, and some programs set higher minimums for honors standing or course prerequisites.

Check your own grade scale before you pick a target, because the letter behind a percentage also decides the grade points added to your GPA. One letter step can shift a scholarship or program application.

Planning Your Study Time Before the Final

Once you know the score you need, compare it with your past test results. If you usually score about 75% and need 84%, you have a clear gap to close with a proper study plan.

Findings from a major review of learning techniques rate practice testing and spaced repetition among the most useful strategies. Active recall with flashcards and practice exams under timed conditions usually beats rereading notes or highlighting.

Work through past papers, focus on topics that cost you marks last time, and bring specific questions to office hours. Kent State University researchers report that rereading and highlighting help far less than testing yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Multiply your current grade by the weight of the rest of the course, subtract that from your target grade, then divide by the final exam weight. The calculator does this instantly and shows several targets at once.

What score do I need on my final to pass?

Set the target to your school's pass mark, usually 50% at Canadian universities or 60% at many US schools. The result table also shows the score needed to pass alongside higher letter grades.

What if the final is worth 50%?

Enter 50 as the final exam weight. With a current grade of 70% and a target of 75%, you would need 80% on the final, because each half of the course counts equally.

Can I get an A if I need more than 100% on the final?

Not from the final alone. Check whether your course offers extra credit, bonus marks, drops a lowest score, or allows a rewrite. Otherwise, choose the highest target that shows a score of 100% or less.

Where do I find my final exam weight?

Look in the course syllabus or outline, which lists each assessment and its weight. If your course uses points, divide the final exam's points by the total points in the course and multiply by 100.

What if my final exam is worth 0%?

A final worth 0% cannot change your course grade, so your current grade is already your final grade. The calculator needs a weight above zero to work out a required score for the exam.
