How to Use the HST Calculator

- Choose Add HST, or Remove HST to find the price before tax.
- Enter the amount before tax, or the total if you are reversing.
- Pick the province: Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland or PEI.
- Read the total with HST and the federal and provincial parts.
Choose Add HST when you have a price before tax and want the total. Choose Remove HST when you have a receipt total and need the amount before tax, the reverse calculation used in bookkeeping.
Enter the amount, then pick the province where the sale takes place. The five options are the provinces that charge harmonized sales tax, each shown with its combined rate so you can check it quickly.
The result shows the amount before tax, the HST amount, the total with HST, and how the tax splits between the 5% federal part and the provincial part. Another table repeats it for every province.
HST Rates by Province in 2026
Harmonized sales tax combines the 5% federal GST with a provincial portion into one rate. Five provinces use it in 2026, and the Canada Revenue Agency collects the full amount for both levels of government.
Ontario charges 13%, while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island each charge 15%. Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025, and that lower rate still applies.
Rates are confirmed against the CRA page listing GST/HST rates by province, the official source for the rate that applies in each province. The calculator uses these rates, reviewed whenever a province announces a change.
| Province | HST rate | Federal part | Provincial part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 13% | 5% | 8% |
| Nova Scotia | 14% | 5% | 9% |
| New Brunswick | 15% | 5% | 10% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% | 5% | 10% |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% | 5% | 10% |
GST, PST and QST in Non-HST Provinces
Alberta and the territories charge only the 5% GST. British Columbia and Manitoba add a 7% PST, Saskatchewan adds 6% PST, and Quebec adds its own 9.975% QST, each charged separately from the federal GST.
- Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut: 5% GST only
- British Columbia and Manitoba: 5% GST plus 7% PST
- Saskatchewan: 5% GST plus 6% PST
- Quebec: 5% GST plus 9.975% QST
Because these taxes are charged separately, this HST calculator does not cover those provinces at all. For Quebec, use our GST QST calculator, and for Alberta or the three territories use the GST calculator instead.
In Manitoba, an MB tax calculator applies 12% in total, the 5% GST plus 7% PST, on most goods. Quebec figures can be confirmed in the Revenu Québec rate tables for the GST and QST.
HST Formulas for Adding and Removing Tax
To add HST, multiply the price before tax by the rate to get the tax, or multiply by 1 plus the rate to get the total with HST. In Ontario that means multiplying by 1.13.
To remove HST, divide the receipt total by 1 plus the rate. This reverse calculator step gives the price before tax, and subtracting that price from the total leaves the HST amount that was charged.
Never subtract 13% from a total. The tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax price, so taking 13% off the total removes too much. Always divide by 1.13 in Ontario, or 1.15 in Atlantic provinces.
Remove HST: price = total ÷ (1 + rate), HST = total − price
Worked Examples and Common Amounts
For a worked example, adding Ontario HST to $100 gives $13.00 of tax and a total of $113.00. Removing HST from a $113.00 Ontario receipt gives $113.00 divided by 1.13, which is $100.00 before tax.
In Nova Scotia, a $250 purchase carries $35.00 of HST for a total of $285.00. Removing 15% HST from a $57.50 receipt in New Brunswick leaves $50.00 before tax and an HST amount of $7.50.
The table shows totals for some common prices. For rounding, work out the tax to the nearest cent first, then subtract it from the total, so the two parts add back to the receipt exactly.
| Price before tax | Ontario 13% | Nova Scotia 14% | NB, NL, PEI 15% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $11.30 | $11.40 | $11.50 |
| $50 | $56.50 | $57.00 | $57.50 |
| $100 | $113.00 | $114.00 | $115.00 |
| $500 | $565.00 | $570.00 | $575.00 |
| $1,000 | $1,130.00 | $1,140.00 | $1,150.00 |
HST for Businesses and Bookkeeping
Businesses use the reverse calculation to split the tax out of every receipt and invoice for bookkeeping. The HST you paid on business purchases is recorded separately from the cost of the goods or services.
A GST/HST registrant can usually claim the HST paid on business purchases as an input tax credit, which reduces the tax owed to the CRA. Keep receipts showing the supplier's GST/HST number for the claim.
When you sell, charge the rate of the province where the goods or services are delivered, not where your business is based. That is why the calculator asks for the province of the sale itself.
Exemptions, Rebates and Limits
Some supplies are zero-rated, such as basic groceries, and some are exempt, such as most medical services. Neither one carries HST, so entering those amounts here would overstate the tax you actually pay at checkout.
Some provinces also give a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part on items like children's clothing or printed books. The calculator applies the full rate to any amount you enter and does not model rebates.
Results are estimates for planning, not tax, legal or financial advice. Tax treatment depends on what is sold and where it is delivered, so confirm important figures with the CRA or a qualified tax professional.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 13% HST in Ontario?
Multiply the price by 0.13 to get the HST, or by 1.13 to get the total. For example, $80 plus HST is $80 times 1.13, which equals $90.40 including $10.40 of tax.
How do I remove HST from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For Ontario, $226 divided by 1.13 is $200 before tax, so the HST is $26. Do not subtract 13% from the total, because that removes too much.
What is the HST rate in Nova Scotia?
Nova Scotia's HST has been 14% since April 1, 2025, made up of the 5% federal GST and a 9% provincial part. It was 15% before that date.
Which provinces charge 15% HST?
New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15% HST in 2026. Ontario charges 13% and Nova Scotia charges 14%, so these five are the only HST provinces.
Is HST the same as GST?
No. HST is the 5% GST combined with a provincial portion in participating provinces. In other provinces only the 5% GST is federal, and any PST or QST is charged separately.
Why is my reverse HST result one cent off?
Stores round tax at different stages, such as per item or per receipt, so a reverse result can differ by a cent. Round the tax to the nearest cent, then subtract it from the total.
