How to Play Charades With This Generator

How to use the charades generator: pick category, difficulty and time, start the round and act
Numbered steps on the Charades Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose a category such as animals, jobs, sports or food.
  2. Set the difficulty: easy for kids, medium or hard.
  3. Pick the round length, from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
  4. Press Start round to begin the timer.
  5. Act out the word, then tap Got it or Skip to move to the next one.

Split into two teams, then choose a category, a difficulty and a round length of 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The line under the menus tells you how many words are in the current deck.

One player takes the phone or laptop and presses Start round. The timer counts down, the first word appears, and the player acts it out while teammates shout their guesses as fast as they can.

Press Got it for a correct guess or Skip to pass, and a new word appears instantly. Tick hide the word when passing one phone around, so only the actor sees each word after tapping.

Charades Rules

The actor must act out the word with no talking, no mouthing of letters and no sounds at all. Gestures, facial expressions and whole body movement are allowed, and all teammates can guess out loud.

Pointing at props or objects in the room is not allowed, because it makes the game too easy. The generator reminds players of this when a round starts, so everyone plays by the same rules.

Each correct guess scores exactly one point for the acting team. When time runs out, hand over to the other team, and after an agreed number of rounds the team with the most points wins.

Charades Words for Every Age

This charades word generator holds 345 words in seven categories: animals, actions, jobs, sports, objects, food and characters. Every list is family-friendly and split into easy, medium and hard levels for players of different ages.

DifficultyExample wordsBest for
Easydog, sleeping, pizza, pirateYoung kids and warm-up rounds
Mediumpenguin, juggling, hairdresser, surfingMixed family groups
Hardplatypus, parallel parking, archaeologist, pole vaultTeens, adults and party games

Easy words are concrete things and simple verbs that small children know, such as frog, clapping or banana. They are quick to act and quick to guess, which keeps younger players involved in every round.

Hard words need a whole scene, such as landing a plane or a lighthouse keeper. Choose Mixed difficulty for a varied party deck, or pick one category when you want a themed round for everyone.

How Words Are Picked

The generator uses the secure random source built into your browser through the Web Cryptography API. It shuffles every word that matches your settings into a deck, then deals the words one at a time.

Words never repeat until the whole deck has been used, so the same prompt will not come up twice in one game. When the deck runs out, it is reshuffled automatically and play simply continues.

Changing the category or difficulty builds a brand new deck straight away. Nothing is sent to a server, and the words, scores and settings stay on your own device for the whole time you play.

Scoring and Timing

The score counts words guessed correctly in the round, and the skipped counter shows how many were passed. At the end of the round, the result note shows both numbers so you can record them.

score = words guessed correctly in the round
success rate = score ÷ (score + skipped) × 100

For example, a team that guesses 7 words and skips 3 in a 60 second round scores 7, with a success rate of 70%. Sixty seconds is a good default for most family groups playing.

A common house rule subtracts one point for every skip after the first two, which stops players from skipping too quickly. Use 90 seconds or 2 minutes for hard words or for very young actors.

Classic Charades Signals

Traditional charades uses a set of hand signals that help the actor guide the guesses without speaking. They are most useful for phrases and multi-word prompts, such as riding a bike or a fire extinguisher.

  • Number of words: hold up that many fingers before you start.
  • Which word: hold up fingers again to show which word you are acting.
  • Sounds like: tug your ear, then act out a rhyming word.
  • Close: wave your hand toward yourself to say keep going.
  • Small word: hold your thumb and finger close together for words like a or the.

Agree on the signals before the game starts, especially with new or younger players. The sounds like signal is the most powerful one, because acting a rhyme is often easier than acting the word itself.

Showing the number of words saves time on long prompts. If a word has several syllables, some groups allow a signal for syllables, laying fingers on the forearm to show which part you are acting.

Charades Variations

Charades adapts easily to many different groups, spaces and settings. These variations work with the same word generator and the same score counters, so you can switch between them without changing any settings at all.

  • Video call charades: send the word privately to the actor, then play over camera.
  • Classroom charades: use Jobs or Animals to practice vocabulary, with the class as one team.
  • Relay charades: each team member acts one word in turn until the timer ends.

Teachers often use charades games for vocabulary practice with language learners, and the British Council drama activities show similar mime games for young learners. The Actions and Animals categories on Easy suit most early readers.

For a relay, set a longer round of 2 minutes so every player gets a turn. For video calls, keep the camera angle wide enough to show the actor's whole body, not just the face.

Funny Charades Ideas

For a funny charades generator feel, choose Actions or Characters on Hard. Prompts like stepping on a Lego brick, sneezing in slow motion or a statue coming to life are silly and fun to watch.

Other favorites include opening a stuck jar, catching a fly, walking in deep snow and a grumpy troll. The more the actor commits to the scene, the funnier the round becomes for everyone else watching.

For younger kids, stick with easy animals and actions such as kangaroo, yawning or brushing teeth. They are quick to guess, keep everyone involved and still produce plenty of laughter in a very short round.

Frequently asked questions

What are good charades words for kids?

Easy animals and actions work best, such as dog, frog, elephant, swimming, sleeping and brushing teeth. Choose Easy difficulty for a kid-friendly deck that young children can act and guess quickly.

How long should a charades round be?

60 seconds is a good default for families. Use 90 seconds or 2 minutes for hard words or younger players, and 30 seconds for fast rounds with experienced adults.

Can words repeat?

Not until the deck runs out. The generator shuffles all matching words and deals each one once before reshuffling, so no prompt comes up twice in the same game.

Are the charades words family friendly?

Yes. Every list was written to be suitable for children and mixed-age groups, including the hard words, which are harder to act rather than unsuitable for any age.

Can I play charades on one phone?

Yes. Tick Hide the word, pass the phone to the actor, and they tap the card to see the word privately. The timer and score keep running for the whole round.

How many charades words do I need?

This generator holds 345 words, enough for a long evening. A 60 second round usually uses five to ten words, so a family game of ten rounds needs around one hundred.
