How to use the band name generator

- Pick a genre such as rock, metal, indie or jazz, or keep any genre.
- Choose how many names to generate: 5, 10 or 20.
- Optionally add a word you want in the name, like a place or inside joke.
- Press Generate names as many times as you like.
- Read your top pick, then copy it or any name from the list.
Choose a genre, or leave it on Any genre for a mix, and press Generate. The first result appears as the top pick and the rest are listed below with the genre each one was built from. Click any name to copy it, or use Copy all to paste the whole list into a group chat and vote.
To make a name feel personal, type a word in the optional box, such as your street, a pet's name, an inside joke or the town where you rehearse. The generator then builds names around that word, such as "The Maple Wolves" or "Maple and the Comets".
How the names are built
Each genre has its own hand-written word lists of 20 adjectives, 20 singular nouns and 20 plural nouns, chosen to match the mood of that style: heavy and mythic for metal, soft and nostalgic for indie, bright and sparkly for pop, scrappy for punk. The words are combined with six classic band name patterns.
with A = 20 adjectives, S = 20 singular nouns, P = 20 plural nouns
That gives 800 + 1,200 + 400 = 2,400 possible names per genre and 19,200 across all eight genres. With your own word, four patterns are used instead: 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 80 names per genre. Every word is picked with your browser's secure random source, and a list never shows the same name twice.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| The + adjective + plural noun | The Velvet Comets |
| Adjective + plural noun | Frozen Sentinels |
| Noun + plural noun | Cassette Foxes |
| Adjective + noun | Neon Orbit |
| Noun + and the + plural noun | Lighthouse and the Fireflies |
| Plural noun + of + noun | Echoes of Static |
What makes a good band name
- Easy to say and spell. If people cannot spell it after hearing it once, they cannot search for you.
- Searchable. A name made of two very common words is hard to find online. An unusual pairing helps.
- Fits the sound. A name like "Obsidian Titans" sets different expectations from "Paper Postcards". Make sure it matches your music.
- Looks good small. Picture it on a poster, a streaming thumbnail and a T-shirt. Shorter names usually work better.
- Ages well. Avoid jokes and trends that will feel dated in a few years.
Check the name before you use it
A generator cannot know whether a name is taken. Before you print merchandise or register accounts, search the major streaming services, social media platforms and a web search engine for the exact name. Check whether the matching domain name and social handles are free. In Canada, you can search the Canadian Trademarks Database, and in the United States the USPTO trademark search, to see whether a name is registered for music or entertainment. Using a name that another act has already registered can force a costly change later.
Band name ideas by genre
Rock names lean on roads, engines and weather. Metal names use stone, fire, ice and mythic creatures. Indie names borrow everyday objects with a nostalgic feel. Pop names are bright and romantic. Punk names are proudly scruffy. Electronic names sound technical and futuristic, country names draw on prairie and ranch life, and jazz names evoke late nights, brass and city streets. Try a genre you do not play, too: an unexpected name can be the most memorable.
Frequently asked questions
How do I come up with a band name?
Start with words linked to your sound, your hometown or a shared memory, combine them in a classic pattern, and say the result out loud. A generator gives you many combinations quickly so you can spot one that fits.
Are these band names original?
The names are random combinations of hand-picked words, so most will be unique, but a generator cannot check whether a name is already used. Search streaming services and trademark databases before you adopt one.
Can I add my own word to the band name?
Yes. Type a word in the optional box and every suggestion will include it, for example The Maple Wolves or Maple and the Comets.
How many band names can the generator make?
There are 2,400 possible names per genre and 19,200 across all eight genres. With your own word, there are 80 names per genre.
Can I trademark a band name?
Band names can be registered as trademarks for music and entertainment services. Contact your national trademark office, such as the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, or a trademark lawyer for advice.
