How the Birthday Calculator works: Your birth weekday, zodiac, birthstone and next birthday countdown.

How to Use the Birthday Calculator

How to use the birthday calculator: enter a date of birth and a count-from date, then read the birthday countdown.
Numbered steps on the Birthday Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Leave today's date, or pick another date to count down from.
  3. Read the countdown, birth weekday, zodiac sign, birthstone and upcoming milestones.

Enter a date of birth. The count from date starts at today, and you can change it to another day. The birthday calculator then shows how many days until the next birthday, in large type.

Beside the countdown you see the weekday of birth, the age they are turning, the Western zodiac sign, the modern birthstone, the half birthday and the total days old, all updating instantly as you type.

A milestone table lists dates such as 10,000 days and 1 billion seconds, each with its own countdown. If you wanted a birthday generator of party facts, these results make ready-made invitation and card ideas.

Worked Example: Born June 15, 1994

Here is a quick worked example. Someone born on June 15, 1994 was born on a Wednesday. Counting from September 30, 2026, the next birthday is Tuesday, June 15, 2027, which is 258 days away.

They will be turning 33 years old on that date. Their zodiac sign is Gemini, their birthstone is pearl, and their half birthday falls on December 15, exactly six months after the birthday in June.

They turned 10,000 days old on October 31, 2021, and will reach 15,000 days on July 10, 2035. Both dates appear in the milestone table, along with the exact number of days still to go.

Day of the Week You Were Born and Why It Shifts

The born on line answers the classic question of which day of the week you arrived. The calculator reads it straight from the calendar, so it is always correct for any past date you enter.

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day. So a birthday usually moves one weekday later each year: a Monday birthday this year normally falls on a Tuesday next year.

In a leap year the extra day, February 29, pushes birthdays after it two weekdays later instead of one. The full weekday pattern of birthdays therefore repeats only after a number of years that varies.

Zodiac Sign Dates

The calculator uses the common Western, or tropical, zodiac sign ranges shown below. The exact moment the Sun changes sign shifts by about a day in some years, so a cusp birthday can differ slightly.

SignDatesSignDates
AriesMar 21 to Apr 19LibraSep 23 to Oct 22
TaurusApr 20 to May 20ScorpioOct 23 to Nov 21
GeminiMay 21 to Jun 20SagittariusNov 22 to Dec 21
CancerJun 21 to Jul 22CapricornDec 22 to Jan 19
LeoJul 23 to Aug 22AquariusJan 20 to Feb 18
VirgoAug 23 to Sep 22PiscesFeb 19 to Mar 20

For example, January 19 is still Capricorn, while December 22 is the first day of Capricorn. People born on a cusp may see a different sign in an astrology chart calculated for their birth time.

Astronomy and astrology differ here. The Sun actually passes through 13 constellations, including Ophiuchus, but the traditional zodiac keeps 12 equal signs, so signs are a cultural convention rather than current positions in the sky.

Birthstones by Month

For birthstones, the calculator uses the widely used modern list: January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal, November topaz and December turquoise.

Several months also have alternative stones. June adds moonstone and alexandrite, and October adds tourmaline, according to the Gemological Institute of America. Jewelers often let customers choose freely between the traditional and the modern options.

A birthstone makes a very thoughtful gift idea, from a simple pendant to a statement ring. Pearl and opal need gentler care than harder stones such as sapphire or diamond, which suit everyday rings better.

Half Birthdays and Day Milestones

A half birthday falls six months after the birthday. When that day does not exist, such as August 31 plus six months, the calculator uses the last day of that month, which is February 28.

Day milestones make fun alternatives to regular birthdays. The table covers 1,000 days, 5,000 days, 10,000 days, 500 months, 1,000 weeks, 1 billion seconds and larger round counts all the way up to 30,000 days.

The 10,000 days milestone arrives at about 27.4 years old, and 1 billion seconds at about 31.7 years. Many people have never heard of them, which makes them memorable reasons for a fun surprise party.

Leap Day Birthdays

If you were born on February 29, the countdown uses February 28 in common years, and a note flags the leap day. Some people prefer to celebrate on March 1 instead, and legal rules vary.

For someone born on February 29, 2000, a Tuesday, the countdown from September 30, 2026 shows 151 days, landing on February 28, 2027. Their zodiac sign is Pisces, and their birthstone is the purple amethyst.

A leap day baby, sometimes called a leapling, only sees their true date once every four years, with some century exceptions. The National Research Council Canada explains which years count as leap years and why.

Ideas for Using Your Birthday Results

Plan a party around a day milestone rather than a round-number birthday. A 10,000 days invitation, with the exact date from the table, surprises guests and gives the whole celebration a clear and memorable theme.

Use the countdown to schedule gift orders, bookings and travel. Because the day count is exact, you can set reminders a set number of days ahead, such as two full weeks before the big birthday.

Share the weekday of birth, zodiac sign and birthstone in a card or post. For exact ages in years, months and days, or for ages on other dates, the age calculator gives much more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What day of the week was I born?

Enter your date of birth and read the born on value. For example, June 15, 1994 was a Wednesday. The calculator works for any past date, so you can check parents and grandparents too.

How many days until my birthday?

The large number in the result is the days from today until your next birthday. Change the count from date to measure from another day, such as the start of a trip.

When is my half birthday?

It is six months after your birthday. A June 15 birthday has a half birthday on December 15. If that date does not exist, the last day of the month is used instead.

When will I be 10,000 days old?

Add 10,000 days to your birth date, which lands at about 27.4 years old. The milestone table lists this date and other milestones, each with a countdown of days remaining.

How is the zodiac sign worked out?

The calculator uses the common Western sign date ranges, such as Gemini from May 21 to June 20. Cusp dates can shift by a day from year to year, so borderline birthdays may differ.

What is my birthstone?

The calculator uses the modern birthstone list, from garnet in January to turquoise in December. Some months have alternatives, such as alexandrite for June and tourmaline for October.
