Bowling Score Calculator

Type each ball into the score sheet: X for a strike, / for a spare, a number for pins and - for a miss. Running totals fill in as you go, including strike and spare bonuses and the 10th frame fill balls.

Strike = 10 + the next two balls. Spare = 10 + the next ball. A frame total appears once its bonus balls are entered. In the 10th frame a strike or spare earns fill balls.

How to Use the Bowling Score Calculator

How to use the bowling score calculator: type each ball into the frames and read the running total
Numbered steps on the Bowling Score Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Type each ball: X for a strike, / for a spare, a number or - for a miss.
  2. Use up to three balls in the 10th frame after a strike or spare.
  3. Load a sample game, a perfect game or clear the sheet.
  4. Read the total, running scores, strike and spare counts and max possible score.

Each frame on the score sheet has a box for each ball. Type X for a strike, / for a spare, a number from 0 to 9 for the pins knocked down, and - or F for a miss or foul. After a strike in frames 1 to 9, the second box locks because the frame is over. The cursor jumps to the next box as you type, and Backspace in an empty box moves back.

Running totals appear under each frame once its bonus balls are known. The result panel shows the total or score so far, counts of strikes, spares and open frames, the maximum score still possible if every remaining ball is a strike, and a frame by frame table. Use the buttons to load a sample game, a perfect 300 game or a blank sheet.

Ten-Pin Bowling Scoring Rules

open frame = pins in ball 1 + pins in ball 2
spare (/) = 10 + pins on the next ball
strike (X) = 10 + pins on the next two balls
10th frame: a strike earns two fill balls, a spare earns one

A game has ten frames. In frames 1 to 9 you get two balls to knock down all ten pins, unless the first ball is a strike. In the 10th frame you can roll up to three balls: if you strike or spare, you get the extra balls so the bonus can be counted. Fill balls only count toward the 10th frame itself.

Worked Example

The sample game is X, 7/, 9-, X, X, 81, 6/, X, 9/, XX8. Frame 1 is a strike followed by 7 and 3, so it scores 10 + 7 + 3 = 20. Frame 2 is a spare followed by a 9: 10 + 9 = 19, total 39. Frame 3 is open: 9, total 48. Frame 4 is a strike followed by a strike and an 8: 28, total 76. Frame 5 is a strike followed by 8 and 1: 19, total 95. Frames 6 to 9 add 9, 20, 20 and 20 for totals of 104, 124, 144 and 164. In the 10th, X X 8 is 28, for a final score of 192.

Maximum Possible Score

During a game the calculator also works out the best score you can still reach. It completes the sheet with the best remaining balls: a spare if you are in the middle of a frame and strikes after that. If the panel shows 280 after X and 7/, that means striking out from frame 3 onward would finish at 280.

Reading a Bowling Score Sheet

On a printed sheet, each frame has small boxes for the balls and a large box for the running total. A strike is written in the last small box of the frame, and a spare as a slash in the second box. Splits are often circled. This calculator follows the same logic: totals only appear once the frame is complete and any bonus balls have been rolled.

Scoring Tips

  • Strikes matter most when they come in a row. Three strikes in a row, a turkey, gives the first of them the full 30 points.
  • Converting spares is the fastest way to raise an average. Each open frame costs at least 10 bonus points compared with a spare.
  • Fouls count as zero pins for that ball, but the pins knocked down still have to be reset as if the ball scored nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How is a strike scored in bowling?

A strike is worth 10 plus the pins knocked down on your next two balls. A strike followed by 7 and 2 scores 19 for that frame, and three strikes in a row give the first one 30 points.

How is a spare scored?

A spare is worth 10 plus the pins on your next ball. A spare followed by an 8 scores 18. The next ball also counts normally in its own frame, so it is counted twice.

How does the 10th frame work in bowling?

In the 10th frame a strike earns two more balls and a spare earns one more ball. These fill balls only add to the 10th frame score. Without a mark, the 10th frame has just two balls.

What is the highest possible bowling score?

The maximum is 300, which needs 12 strikes in a row: one in each of frames 1 to 9 and three in the 10th frame. Every frame then scores 30.

Why is my running total blank under some frames?

A strike or spare is not finished until the bonus balls are rolled. The calculator leaves the total blank until those balls are entered, then fills it in automatically.

What do the symbols X, / and - mean?

X is a strike, / is a spare, and - is a miss with no pins. F marks a foul, which counts as zero pins for that ball. Numbers show how many pins fell.
