How to Use the Inches to Feet Converter

How to use the inches to feet converter: choose a direction, type inches or fractions, set rounding, read feet
Numbered steps on the Inches to Feet Converter. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose inches to feet, or switch to feet to inches.
  2. Type the length. Decimals and fractions such as 67 1/2 both work.
  3. Pick how to round the leftover inches, from 1/2 inch to 1/32 inch or decimals.
  4. Read the feet and inches, with decimal feet, yards, centimeters and meters below.

Type a length in inches. The big result shows it as feet and inches, the way a tape measure or a height chart reads, and the stats show the same length in decimal feet, yards, centimeters and meters. Choose how finely to round the leftover inches: to the nearest 1/16 inch for woodworking, 1/2 inch for heights, or two decimal places for engineering drawings.

The box accepts decimals (67.5), mixed numbers (67 1/2), simple fractions (3/8) and the characters ½, ¼ and ¾. Switch the direction to Feet to inches to go the other way. The small table lists the nearest whole feet so you can see the length in context.

Inches to Feet Formula

A foot is defined as exactly 12 inches, and since 1959 an inch has been exactly 2.54 centimeters. That makes every conversion on this page exact apart from the final rounding.

feet = inches ÷ 12
whole feet = floor(inches ÷ 12), leftover inches = inches − 12 × whole feet
inches = feet × 12
centimeters = inches × 2.54

Worked Example

A person is 67 inches tall. 67 ÷ 12 = 5.5833 feet. The whole number of feet is 5, which uses 60 inches, leaving 7 inches. So 67 inches is 5 ft 7 in, or 170.18 cm.

A board measures 100 3/8 inches. 100.375 ÷ 12 = 8.3646 feet. Eight feet uses 96 inches, leaving 4 3/8 inches, so the board is 8 ft 4 3/8 in long. Going the other way, 5.5 feet is 5.5 × 12 = 66 inches.

Decimal Feet or Feet and Inches?

Builders, carpenters and anyone reading a tape measure work in feet and inches with fractions. Surveyors, civil engineers and spreadsheets usually use decimal feet, where 0.5 ft means 6 inches, not 5 inches. Mixing the two is a common source of errors: 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in, while 5 ft 5 in is 5.4167 ft. The converter shows both forms so you always know which one you have.

Tips

  • To convert decimal feet back to inches, multiply only the decimal part by 12. For 8.3646 ft, 0.3646 × 12 = 4.375 in, which is 4 3/8 in.
  • Rounding to 1/16 inch matches most tape measures. Choose 1/32 inch for fine work.
  • Heights in Canada and the US are often given as 5′7″, where ′ means feet and ″ means inches. You can paste a value with the inch mark and the converter ignores it.

Converting Heights

Height is the most common reason to convert inches to feet. Doctors, sports rosters and many online forms record height in inches or centimeters, while people describe it in feet and inches. To convert, divide by 12 and keep the remainder as inches: 70 inches is 5 ft 10 in, 74 inches is 6 ft 2 in. To convert a metric height, divide the centimeters by 2.54 first, so 180 cm is 70.87 inches, or about 5 ft 10.9 in. Rounding to the nearest half inch is usual for heights, which you can choose in the rounding menu above.

For metric heights, the converter also shows centimeters and meters for every value you enter, so you can check a form in either system.
