Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates or the other way round, so you know exactly where to build a linked portal. The calculator shows the exact and block coordinates and how much shorter the trip is through the Nether.

How to Use the Nether Portal Calculator

How to use the nether portal calculator: choose a direction, enter portal coordinates, then read the matching spot
Numbered steps on the Nether Portal Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose Overworld to Nether or Nether to Overworld.
  2. Enter the X, Y and Z of your existing portal.
  3. Optionally enter a start point to compare travel distances.
  4. Read the matching coordinates and the exact block to build your portal at.

Choose the direction. Overworld to Nether divides your X and Z coordinates by 8 to show where the matching portal belongs in the Nether. Nether to Overworld multiplies them by 8. Type the X, Y and Z of the portal you already have; read them from the coordinates or debug screen in the game. Switching direction carries the result across, so you can check a round trip with one click.

The optional start point lets you compare travel distances. Leave it at 0, 0 to measure from the world spawn area, or enter your base coordinates to see how much walking a Nether shortcut saves. The copy button copies the result as three numbers separated by spaces.

The Conversion Rule

Nether X = Overworld X ÷ 8    Nether Z = Overworld Z ÷ 8
Overworld X = Nether X × 8    Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8
Y (height) is not scaled
Block position = round down (floor) of the exact value

Every block you travel horizontally in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. Height is not scaled. Because positions are whole blocks, the exact result is rounded down to the block you stand in, which matters for negative numbers: −125.375 becomes −126, not −125.

Worked Example

Your Overworld portal is at X 1000, Y 64, Z −2400. Dividing X and Z by 8 gives X 125 and Z −300, so the matching Nether portal belongs at 125, 64, −300. From a base at 0, 0 the Overworld trip is √(1,000² + 2,400²) = 2,600 blocks, while the same journey in the Nether is only 325 blocks.

For a portal at X −1003, Z 77, the exact Nether position is −125.375, 9.625, so the block to build at is X −126, Z 9.

How Portal Linking Works

When you step through a portal, the game converts your position to the other dimension and looks for an existing portal near that spot. If it finds one, you arrive there; if not, it builds a new portal close to the converted coordinates. Problems usually appear when two Overworld portals are close together: both can convert to nearly the same Nether position and end up sharing one Nether portal. Building each Nether portal at the exact converted coordinates, and keeping Overworld portals well apart, keeps every pair linked correctly.

If you want one Nether portal to serve two Overworld bases, place the bases far enough apart that their converted Nether positions are well separated, then build a separate Nether portal for each.

Building Tips

  • The smallest portal frame is 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall, with an opening of 2 by 3. The corner blocks are optional.
  • Build the Nether side first at the converted coordinates, then light it and walk through to check you arrive at the right Overworld portal.
  • Use the same Y level where possible. The Nether has a bedrock ceiling around Y 128, so keep portals below it.
  • Nether highways are popular because one block of Nether tunnel covers eight blocks of Overworld travel, which makes long journeys much faster.

Editions and Versions

The 8 to 1 scale for X and Z applies in both major editions of the game. The exact rules for how far the game searches for an existing portal and where it places a new one have changed between versions, so if a portal links unexpectedly, move the new portal closer to the exact converted coordinates. This calculator is an independent fan tool and is not affiliated with the game’s developer or publisher.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?

Divide the X and Z coordinates by 8 and keep Y the same. A portal at X 1000, Z -2400 in the Overworld links to X 125, Z -300 in the Nether. Round down to get the block position.

How do I convert Nether coordinates to the Overworld?

Multiply the Nether X and Z coordinates by 8 and keep the Y coordinate. A Nether portal at X 125, Z -300 matches an Overworld location at X 1000, Z -2400.

Is the Y coordinate divided by 8?

No. Only the horizontal X and Z coordinates are scaled. Height stays the same, although the Nether has a bedrock ceiling around Y 128, so very high Overworld portals need a lower Nether portal.

Why does my portal link to the wrong place?

The game links to the nearest existing portal around the converted coordinates. If two portals sit close together, both can lead to the same one. Build each new portal at the exact converted X and Z to fix the link.

How much faster is Nether travel?

Every block traveled horizontally in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. A 2,600 block Overworld journey takes only 325 blocks through the Nether, which is why players build Nether highways.

How are negative coordinates rounded?

Positions are rounded down to the whole block, which moves negative numbers further from zero. An exact Nether X of -125.375 is block -126. The calculator shows both the exact value and the block to build at.
