How to Use the Upside Down Text Generator

- Type or paste the text you want to flip.
- Clear the box to start again.
- Copy the upside down version, or the flipped, mirrored or reversed one below.
Type or paste your text into the box. The upside down text generator shows four versions at once: fully upside down, flipped in the same order, mirrored, and simply reversed, all updating as you type.
Press copy beside the version you want, then paste it into a bio, caption, comment or message. The result is ordinary text, so it pastes anywhere that accepts emoji, with no app or keyboard needed.
People often search for an upside down font generator, but no font is involved. The tool swaps characters, which is why the flipped text survives copy and paste between phones, browsers and apps without changing.
How Flipping Works
There is no upside down font. The tool uses character substitution, swapping each typed letter for a different Unicode character, a look-alike that resembles the original turned 180 degrees, such as ɐ in place of a.
mirror = reverse(order of characters), then replace each with its mirrored look-alike
It then reverses the order of characters. Rotate a line 180 degrees and the last letter ends up first, so the tool has to reverse the order for the result to read correctly upside down.
For example, Hello reversed is olleH, and swapping e for ǝ gives ollǝH, because the letters o, l and H look exactly the same when turned upside down. The flipped version keeps the original order: Hǝllo.
Character Map for Upside Down Letters
Many look-alikes come from the International Phonetic Alphabet, which already includes turned letters used by linguists. The turned a (ɐ) and turned e (ǝ) are standard characters listed in the Unicode code charts for anyone to check.
| Normal | Upside down | Normal | Upside down |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | ɐ | A | ∀ |
| e | ǝ | E | Ǝ |
| h | ɥ | R | ᴚ |
| t | ʇ | T | ⊥ |
| y | ʎ | ? | ¿ |
| ! | ¡ | 7 | ㄥ |
Digits and punctuation are covered too. The upside down question mark is ¿, the same character Spanish uses to open questions, and the digit 7 becomes ㄥ, while 6 and 9 simply swap places with each other.
Some letters, such as o, s, x and z, look the same when rotated and are kept as they are. A few look-alikes borrow from other alphabets, so their shape can vary slightly between fonts.
Mirror Text vs Reversed Text
Mirror text looks like writing seen in a mirror. The order is reversed and letters such as b, d, p, q, E and R are replaced with reversed shapes, so the word bad becomes bɒd.
Mirror writing has a long history. Leonardo da Vinci filled his notebooks with it, possibly for privacy or because he was left-handed, and it appears on ambulances so drivers can read it in their mirrors.
Reversed text only changes the order of the characters and keeps every single letter normal, so Hello becomes olleH. It is handy for simple word puzzles, secret notes and hiding the answers to short riddles.
Where Upside Down Text Works
Because the result is plain Unicode text, it pastes into most places that accept emoji. In practice it usually works in all the apps below, although each one can change its rules at any time.
- Instagram: bio, display name, captions and comments. Usernames only allow basic letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
- TikTok: profile bio, display name, captions and comments.
- Discord: messages, nicknames, channel topics and server descriptions.
- X, Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp: posts, bios and messages.
Instagram, TikTok and Discord accept flipped text in a bio, captions and messages. Facebook and WhatsApp accept it in posts and chats. Usernames are the main exception, because most apps restrict them to basic characters.
Older phones and computers may show empty boxes when a device font lacks a symbol. Preview your text on a second device before using it anywhere important, such as a profile or a group chat.
Turning Upside Down Text Back to Normal
This tool flips text in one direction only. Pasting upside down text back into the input box will not restore it, because the look-alike characters are not mapped back to ordinary letters by the tool.
The simplest way back to normal is to keep your original text. If you only have the flipped version, read it by turning your screen around, then carefully retype it in normal letters where needed.
That one-way design is also why flipped text works well for riddles and spoilers. Readers must make a small effort, such as rotating their phone, before they see the answer you hid in plain sight.
Accessibility and Search Caveats
Screen readers do not treat these symbols as ordinary letters. A flipped word may be read out as a string of symbol names, or skipped completely, so people using assistive technology can miss your message.
Use flipped text for short decorative accents, not whole posts, names that people need to find, or details like dates, prices and links. The W3C accessibility introduction explains why this matters for people with disabilities.
Do not flip hashtags or keywords. Search features match normal letters, so flipped words are usually not found by search at all, and a hidden hashtag brings no new viewers to your post or profile.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type upside down on my phone?
Type your text above, copy the upside down version and paste it into any app. Phones do not have an upside down keyboard, so Unicode look-alike characters are used instead of a special font.
Why is upside down text also reversed?
When you turn a line of text 180 degrees, the last letter ends up first. Reversing the order makes the result read correctly when the screen or page is turned around.
Does upside down text work on Instagram and TikTok?
Yes. It usually works in bios, captions and comments on both apps, although usernames only allow standard characters. Preview it on another device, because some older phones show empty boxes.
Can I flip numbers?
Yes. The digits 0 to 9 are mapped to rotated look-alikes, for example 7 becomes ㄥ, while 6 and 9 swap places. Common punctuation such as question marks and exclamation marks flips too.
Can screen readers read upside down text?
No, not reliably. The characters are read as unrelated symbols or skipped, so use flipped text only for fun and decoration, never for important information such as dates, prices or links.
Is there an upside down font?
No. What looks like an upside down font is a set of Unicode characters that resemble rotated letters. That is why the result can be copied and pasted anywhere instead of needing a font installed.
