How the Greek Font Generator works: Spell English with Greek letters, style them bold or italic, or copy single letters.

How to Use the Greek Font Generator

How to use the Greek font generator: type English, copy a Greek style, or click letters in the alphabet grid
Numbered steps on the Greek Font Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Type a name, word or phrase in English.
  2. Copy the Greek letters card, or a bold, italic or faux Greek style.
  3. Click any letter in the Greek alphabet grid to copy just that letter.
  4. Paste your Greek text into a bio, design, equation or message.

Type a name, a word or a short phrase in English. The first two cards spell it with real Greek letters by sound, in lowercase and in capitals. The next five cards show the same Greek letters in bold, italic, bold italic and two sans-serif styles. The last two cards keep your English readable but swap in Greek look-alikes such as λ for A and σ for o. Press Copy on any card. Below the styles, the full Greek alphabet lets you copy single letters, which is the quickest way to type fraternity and sorority letters, math symbols or a single Δ.

How English Becomes Greek Letters

The phonetic cards use a simple letter-by-letter transliteration. Pairs of letters that stand for a single Greek letter are matched first, then single letters, and a sigma at the end of a word becomes the final form ς. Capitals stay capitals.

p, r, s, tπ ρ σ/ς τu, y, w, zυ υ ω ζ

This gives a readable Greek spelling, not a translation. A Greek speaker would recognize the sounds of your English words, but the words themselves stay English. For real Greek sentences, use a translation service or ask a native speaker.

Bold and Italic Greek for Math and Science

Scientists use bold and italic Greek letters for variables, vectors and constants. Unicode stores them in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, in the same order as the normal Greek alphabet, with one extra capital theta symbol after rho and the nabla symbol at the end of each capital set.

math bold Greek capital = U+1D6A8 + position    (Alpha = U+1D6A8, Omega = U+1D6C0)
math bold Greek small = U+1D6C2 + position    (alpha = U+1D6C2, omega = U+1D6DA)
italic starts at U+1D6E2 and U+1D6FC, bold italic at U+1D71C and U+1D736

Worked Example

"Alpha and Omega" becomes Αλφα ανδ Ομεγα. A turns into capital alpha, l into lambda, the pair ph into phi and the final a into alpha, giving Αλφα. In the bold card, small alpha is U+1D6C2 and small lambda, the 11th Greek letter, is U+1D6C2 + 10 = U+1D6CC, so the first word reads 𝚨𝛌𝛗𝛂. "Sophia Thomas" becomes Σοφια Θομας: ph becomes φ, Th becomes Θ and the last s becomes the final sigma.

Greek Letters for Fraternities, Sororities and Logos

Greek-letter organizations use the initial letters of their Greek names, such as ΑΦΑ for Alpha Phi Alpha. Typing the full names into the phonetic card spells each word out instead, so use the alphabet grid and click the three letters you need. The capitals Α, Β, Ε, Ζ, Η, Ι, Κ, Μ, Ν, Ο, Ρ, Τ, Υ and Χ look like Latin letters but are different characters, so copy them from the grid to get genuine Greek letters.

Greek-Style Text That Stays Readable

The two faux Greek cards are a design effect. They replace English letters with Greek letters of a similar shape, so "Greek" becomes Grεεκ. This is popular for party themes, gym names and logos with a classical feel. It is not Greek writing, so avoid it anywhere a Greek reader might expect real words.

Limits

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from alpha to omega, and every one of them is in the grid with its capital and small form. Hover or long-press a letter to see its name, which helps when you need a symbol such as μ for micro, π for pi or Ω for ohms and are not sure which one it is.

Modern Greek has accents, such as the tonos in αί, which this letter-by-letter method does not add. Some letters have more than one English match, so the result is a phonetic guide rather than an official romanization. Math Greek characters may be read by screen readers as their full names.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Greek letters on my keyboard?

The easiest way is to copy them from the alphabet grid on this page. You can also add a Greek keyboard layout in your phone or computer settings, which lets you switch languages and type Greek directly.

Is this an English to Greek translator?

No. It spells English words with Greek letters by sound. The words stay English, so a Greek reader sees familiar sounds but not Greek vocabulary. Use a translation service for real Greek sentences.

How do I get fraternity or sorority letters?

Click the letters you need in the alphabet grid, for example Alpha, Phi and Alpha for ΑΦΑ. Typing the full names into the converter would spell out each name instead of giving the initials.

Why are there two forms of sigma?

Greek writes small sigma as σ inside a word and as ς at the end of a word. The generator applies this rule automatically, and the capital Σ is the same in both positions.

Can I use bold Greek letters in equations?

Yes. The bold and italic cards use the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which is meant for math notation. They paste as text into documents, slides, chats and plain text files.

What is the faux Greek font?

It swaps English letters for Greek letters with a similar shape, such as λ for A and σ for o. It looks Greek but still reads as English, which suits logos, posters and party themes.
