How to Use the Leetspeak Generator

- Type a message, or paste leetspeak to decode.
- Copy the level you want, from basic to ultra.
- Read the Leet to English card to decode pasted leet.
- Paste your 1337 text into a game, chat or gamer tag.
Type a message. Four leet levels update as you type, from a light swap of a few vowels for numbers to ultra leet, where every letter becomes a little drawing made of symbols. Press Copy to use a level. The fifth card, Leet to English, runs in the other direction: paste leetspeak into the box, and it decodes the symbols back into ordinary letters.
The Four Leet Levels
| Level | Swaps | "hello world" |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Basic | a 4, e 3, i 1, o 0, s 5, t 7 | h3ll0 w0rld |
| 2. Intermediate | Basic plus b 8, g 9, l 1, z 2 | h3110 w0r1d |
| 3. Advanced | Symbols: a @, c (, h #, i !, s $ | #3110 w0r1d |
| 4. Ultra | Every letter, e.g. h |-|, m |\/|, w \/\/ | |-|3|_|_0 \/\/0|2|_|) |
Basic leet stays easy to read and works well for usernames and passwords-style jokes. Ultra leet is a puzzle: fun for games and signatures, slow to read for everyone else.
How Leetspeak Translation Works
Encoding is a lookup table: each letter is replaced by its symbol for the chosen level, and characters without an entry stay as they are. Decoding is harder, because one symbol can mean different letters and multi-character symbols overlap. In ultra leet, |_| is u, but |_ followed by |_ is two l letters. The decoder therefore tests every way of splitting a word into known symbols and keeps the split that leaves the fewest unknown characters.
decode: choose the split of each word with the fewest unknown symbols, then map each symbol to its letter
Worked Example
At level 1, "Hello world, elite hackers" keeps H and l but swaps e, o, i, t, a and s: H3ll0 w0rld, 3l173 h4ck3r5. At level 4, "hello" becomes |-|3|_|_0. Reading it back, the decoder could take |_| as u, but that leaves a lone underscore that matches nothing, so it prefers |_ |_ and returns "hello". The famous word 1337 is a special case: it is read as "leet", since 1 stands for l and 7 for t in that word.
A Short History of Leet
Leet, from "elite", grew out of bulletin board systems and early online gaming in the 1980s and 1990s. Users swapped letters for look-alike numbers and symbols to show insider status, to get around word filters and simply for fun. Words like n00b, pwn and h4x0r spread from there into wider gaming culture. Today leetspeak is mostly playful: gamer tags, retro hacker aesthetics, puzzles and nostalgic jokes.
Common Leet Words
Some leet words became slang of their own: n00b for a newcomer, pwn for beating someone, h4x0r for a hacker, w00t for a cheer and 1337 for elite. Type any of them into the box to see the decoder read them back, or encode your own gamer tag at each level and pick the one that still looks like your name.
Tips
- Use level 1 or 2 for names that people still need to read and type.
- Many platforms block symbols such as |, / and < in usernames, so use number-only levels there.
- Leet is not a secure password method. Password cracking tools test common leet swaps automatically, so a long random passphrase or a password manager is far safer.
- Plain numbers such as 2026 are left alone by the decoder, which only changes words that mix letters with numbers or symbols.
Limits
There is no single official leet alphabet. Communities used many variants, so a symbol you know may differ from this table, and the decoder can only read the symbols listed here. Mixed words such as "4ever" may decode to "aever" because the decoder cannot know you meant the number. Everything runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is leetspeak?
Leetspeak, or 1337, is a way of writing English that swaps letters for numbers and symbols that look similar, such as 3 for e and 0 for o. It began in 1980s online communities and remains popular in gaming.
What does 1337 mean?
1337 spells leet, short for elite. The 1 stands for l, the 3s for e and the 7 for t. Gamers use it to describe someone highly skilled, often with a playful or ironic tone.
Can this translate leetspeak back to English?
Yes. Paste leet text into the box and read the Leet to English card. It understands all four levels on this page and picks the most likely letters when symbols overlap.
Which leet level should I use for a username?
Level 1 or level 2 is best. They only use numbers, which almost every platform accepts, and other people can still read and type your name without guessing.
Is leetspeak a good way to make a strong password?
No. Password cracking tools try common leet swaps automatically, so p4ssw0rd is as weak as password. Use a long random passphrase or a password manager instead.
Why did the decoder change a number in my text?
The decoder only changes words that mix letters with digits or symbols, so 4ever becomes aever. Plain numbers like 2026 stay unchanged. Edit those words by hand after decoding.
