How to Use the Medieval Font Generator

- Type a knight's name, a guild or a quest title.
- Copy a blackletter style, a royal frame or the runes.
- Click a medieval symbol such as ⚜ or ✠ to copy it on its own.
- Paste your medieval text into a game, server, sign or invitation.
Type a name, a guild, a castle or a quest title. Ten medieval styles update as you type: two blackletter scripts, a blackletter title style, five decorated frames and two rune styles. Press Copy on the one that suits your knight, realm or fantasy character, then paste it into a game, a Discord server, a party invitation or a social bio. The symbol strip at the bottom copies single characters such as the fleur-de-lis, the Maltese cross or a rune.
Blackletter, the Script of the Middle Ages
From about the 12th century, scribes across Western Europe wrote books in blackletter, also called gothic script. Its narrow, angular strokes packed more words onto expensive parchment. Variants include Textura, used for the Gutenberg Bible printed in the 1450s, and Fraktur, which remained common in German printing for centuries. This is the look most people mean by a medieval font.
The generator does not install a font. It swaps each letter for a fraktur character from the Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, so the style survives copy and paste.
title style: first letter of each word in bold fraktur, the rest in fraktur
Worked Example
In "Sir Arthur", S is the 19th letter, so the bold fraktur capital is U+1D56C + 18 = U+1D57E (𝕾). The small i is the 9th letter: U+1D51E + 8 = U+1D526 (𝔦). The title style therefore writes 𝕾𝔦𝔯 𝕬𝔯𝔱𝔥𝔲𝔯. In runes, the pair th in Arthur becomes a single thurisaz rune, so "Sir Arthur of Camelot" reads ᛊᛁᚱ ᚨᚱᚦᚢᚱ ᛟᚠ ᚲᚨᛗᛖᛚᛟᛏ.
Runes: the Elder Futhark
Runes are older than blackletter. The Elder Futhark, named after its first six letters, was used by Germanic peoples from roughly the 2nd to the 8th century, mostly for short inscriptions on stone, metal and wood. Unicode encodes runes in the Runic block from U+16A0. The generator spells English by sound, one rune per letter, with single runes for th and ng.
| Letters | Rune | Rune name |
|---|---|---|
| a | ᚨ | ansuz |
| f | ᚠ | fehu |
| th | ᚦ | thurisaz |
| r | ᚱ | raido |
| c, k, q | ᚲ | kaunaz |
| ng | ᛜ | ingwaz |
| o | ᛟ | othala |
| v, w | ᚹ | wunjo |
| x | ᚲᛊ | kaunaz and sowilo |
The rune dots style replaces spaces with the runic single punctuation mark ᛫, as many inscriptions separated words with dots. Real rune carvers spelled by sound and had no fixed rules for modern English, so treat the result as a fun transliteration, not a historical text.
Royal and Knightly Frames
The frames surround your text with symbols from heraldry and chess. The fleur-de-lis ⚜ is linked with French royalty, the Maltese cross ✠ with the Knights Hospitaller, crossed swords ⚔ with battle and the chess king ♔ and knight ♞ with court and chivalry. They suit guild names, server titles and character tags.
Medieval Name and Title Ideas
- Knights and heroes: Sir Gawain the Bold, Lady Rowena of the Vale, Brother Aldric.
- Guilds and clans: The Iron Wolves, Order of the Silver Rose, House Blackmoor.
- Places: Ravenhold Keep, the Kingdom of Eldmoor, the Great Hall.
- Events: Midsummer Feast, The Royal Tournament, a medieval themed birthday banquet.
Pair a blackletter title with a short plain-text subtitle, and add one frame symbol rather than several, so the result looks crafted rather than cluttered.
Tips and Limits
- Blackletter capitals are hard to tell apart, so use the title style or lowercase for anything longer than a word or two.
- Unicode has no fraktur digits, so numbers stay normal. Rune styles also leave digits and punctuation unchanged.
- Screen readers announce these characters by name, and search ignores them, so keep important details in normal text.
- Older devices may show boxes for runes. Preview the text before using it in a printed design or a tattoo stencil.
Frequently asked questions
What font did people use in the Middle Ages?
Most books were handwritten in blackletter, also called gothic script, with styles such as Textura and later Fraktur. Earlier periods used rounder hands like uncial and Carolingian minuscule, which have no Unicode copy-and-paste version.
Can this translate English into runes?
It transliterates English letter by letter into Elder Futhark runes, with single runes for th and ng. It does not translate into Old Norse, so the words are still English spelled with runes.
Why do some fraktur letters look slightly different?
The fraktur capitals C, H, I, R and Z come from an older Unicode block, so a few fonts draw them with a different weight. Bold fraktur has a complete alphabet and looks more even.
Can I use medieval text for a Renaissance faire or fantasy game?
Yes. Copy a style for name tags, signs, invitations, Discord servers and character names. For printed signs, check the text on the device you print from, because some older systems lack runes.
What do the medieval symbols mean?
The fleur-de-lis is a royal emblem, the Maltese cross is linked with crusading knights, crossed swords stand for battle and the chess pieces for royalty and knighthood. They are decorative and carry no official meaning online.
Are rune characters safe to use in usernames?
Most platforms block runes in usernames but accept them in display names, bios and messages. Some games filter unusual scripts, so test the name before you build an account around it.
