What is a gothic font?

Gothic script, also called blackletter, was the main book hand across Western Europe from about the 12th century. Its narrow, broken strokes saved space and parchment. Later variants include Textura, used in the Gutenberg Bible, and Fraktur, which stayed common in German printing into the 20th century. Today people often call it Old English lettering because of its use on newspaper mastheads, diplomas and tattoos.

This fraktur font generator does not install a font. It swaps each letter for a character from the Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, where fraktur letters were encoded so mathematicians could write symbols such as 𝔤 for a Lie algebra.

fraktur capital = U+1D504 + (letter position − 1)    fraktur small = U+1D51E + (letter position − 1)
bold fraktur capital = U+1D56C + (position − 1)    bold fraktur small = U+1D586 + (position − 1)
exceptions: ℭ C, ℌ H, ℑ I, ℜ R, ℨ Z (Letterlike Symbols block)

Example

G is the 7th letter, so its fraktur form is U+1D504 + 6 = U+1D50A (𝔊). The small o is the 15th letter: U+1D51E + 14 = U+1D52C (𝔬). "Goth" therefore becomes 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥. The capital H has no slot in the mathematical block because the Black-Letter Capital H (U+210C) already existed, so the generator uses that character instead.

Bold fraktur𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈Heavy Old English look, tattoos and logos

Bold fraktur has a full alphabet with no exceptions, so it often looks more even than regular fraktur. Accented letters, numbers and letters from other alphabets stay in the normal font.

Tips for readable gothic text

  • Blackletter capitals are hard to tell apart (𝔊, 𝔖 and 𝔎 look similar), so avoid writing whole words in capitals.
  • Keep it to a name or a short title. Long sentences in fraktur are tiring to read.
  • Check how the text looks on another phone, since some older devices lack the mathematical letters.

Where these characters work

Because the result is plain Unicode text, it pastes into most places that accept emoji. In practice it usually works in:

  • Instagram: bio, display name, captions and comments. Usernames only allow basic letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
  • TikTok: profile bio, display name, captions and comments.
  • Discord: messages, nicknames, channel topics and server descriptions.
  • X, Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp: posts, bios and messages.

Apps can change what they accept at any time, and some strip or replace unusual characters in names. Older phones and computers may show empty boxes when a font on the device does not include a symbol, so preview your text on a second device before using it somewhere important.

Accessibility and search caveats

Screen readers do not treat these symbols as ordinary letters. Depending on the reader and platform, a styled word may be read out one character at a time with names such as "mathematical bold capital H", or skipped completely. People who rely on assistive technology can miss your message entirely.

  • Use styled text for short decorative accents, not for whole posts, names people need to find or important details like dates, prices and links.
  • Do not style hashtags or keywords. Search features match normal letters, so styled words are usually not found in search.
  • Where the platform offers real formatting, such as bold in Discord Markdown or in a document editor, use that instead because it stays accessible.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real Old English font?

No. It uses Unicode fraktur characters that look like blackletter. That is why the style survives when you paste it into apps that do not let you choose fonts.

Why are some gothic letters slightly different?

Five fraktur capitals (C, H, I, R and Z) come from the older Letterlike Symbols block, so a few fonts draw them with a different weight. Bold fraktur has no such exceptions.

Can I use gothic text in my Instagram bio or Discord name?

Yes. Paste it into your Instagram bio, name or captions, or into Discord nicknames and messages. Usernames themselves only allow standard letters.

Does the gothic font generator work for numbers?

Unicode has no fraktur digits, so numbers are left as normal digits. You can mix them freely with the gothic letters.

What is the difference between fraktur and blackletter?

Blackletter is the family name for medieval gothic scripts. Fraktur is one blackletter style with broken, curved strokes that was used in German printing for centuries.
