How to Use the Chicano Font Generator

How to use the Chicano Font Generator: type a name, choose lettering and arch, preview and download
Numbered steps on the Chicano Font Generator. Follow them in order.
  1. Type the name or word for the lettering.
  2. Pick Old English, script or initials lettering.
  3. Set the arch from flat to a deep banner curve.
  4. Preview on light skin, deep skin or paper.
  5. Download the preview as SVG or PNG.

Type a name, a family name or a short word. The preview draws it as arched lettering, the banner shape used across chest pieces, back pieces and murals. Pick the Lettering, raise or lower the Arch, add an optional second line such as a year or a neighborhood, and switch the ink and background to see it on light skin, deep skin or paper. Tick Mirror for stencil transfer to flip it for a thermal stencil, then download it as SVG or PNG. The ten copy-and-paste styles on the right work in bios, captions and messages.

About Chicano Lettering

Chicano lettering is a hand-lettering tradition from Mexican American communities in the southwestern United States, especially Los Angeles. It grew out of neighborhood wall writing, lowrider culture and fine-line black and gray tattooing, and it adapted blackletter, often called Old English, along with flowing script into sharp, confident letterforms with long tails and careful spacing. Every serious artist has a personal hand. No font or Unicode character set can reproduce that craft, so this tool is a starting point for planning size, shape and wording before working with a lettering or tattoo artist.

arch curve: quadratic Bézier from (150, y) to (850, y) with control point (500, y − 2h)
peak height h = arch × 2.4 pixels, so the middle of the text rises by h

Worked Example

With the default arch of 45, h = 45 × 2.4 = 108 pixels. The baseline sits at y = 262 because a second line is present, so the control point is at 262 − 216 = 46, and the middle of the curve rises to 262 − 108 = 154. "Familia" has 7 letters, so the size rule 1,400 ÷ 7 = 200 is capped at 124 pixels. In bold Old English the word becomes 𝕱𝖆𝖒𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖆, and in the initials style the F is blackletter and the rest bold script: 𝕱𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓵𝓲𝓪.

Planning Lettering for a Tattoo or Mural

  • Check the spelling twice. Names, accents and dates are the most common regrets. Unicode styles drop accents, so tell your artist where they go.
  • Think about size. Fine blackletter needs room. A word across the upper back is often 25 cm or more wide so the thin strokes hold up as skin ages.
  • Use the arch to fit the body. A gentle arch suits the upper back and stomach, while a flat line fits the forearm or collarbone.
  • Bring the preview, not the final art. A good artist will redraw it in their own hand, with proper spacing, shading and flourishes.

Common Placements and Arch Shapes

Arched names across the upper back or the stomach are a classic layout, often paired with a straight line underneath for a year, a city or a second word. A flatter arch suits the forearm, the collarbone and the back of the neck, where curved text can look bent. Script names with a long tail on the last letter are popular on the inner forearm and the ribs. Use the Arch slider to test each shape, and remember that your artist will adjust spacing to follow the curves of the body.

Limits and Respect

The preview uses Unicode blackletter and script characters drawn by your device's math fonts, so the exact shapes depend on your system, and a few older devices may show boxes. The PNG is rasterized from the same preview. This lettering comes from a living culture, so credit and hire Chicano artists for finished work, and use the generator for sketches and ideas. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What font is used for Chicano lettering?

There is no single font. Chicano lettering is hand-drawn, mixing blackletter, often called Old English, with flowing script. The generator uses Unicode blackletter and script letters to help you plan wording, arch and size before an artist draws it.

Can I use this for a tattoo stencil?

Use it as a planning sketch. Tick Mirror for stencil transfer to flip the lettering, download the PNG or SVG, and bring it to your tattoo artist, who will redraw it with proper spacing and line weight.

How do I curve the text into an arch?

Move the Arch slider. At 0 the lettering sits on a straight line, and higher values bend it into a deeper banner arch. Add a second line, such as a year, to sit underneath the arch.

Why can't I see accents in the Old English style?

Unicode only has blackletter versions of the plain letters A to Z, so accented letters fall back to the normal font or lose the accent. Note any accents for your artist so the final piece is spelled correctly.

Can I copy Chicano style text into Instagram?

Yes. The ten styles on the right are Unicode characters that paste into bios, captions and messages. The arched preview is an image, so download it as PNG to post it as a picture.

Is the generator free to use for my mural or design?

Yes, the tool is free and runs in your browser. For finished murals, logos or tattoos, hire a lettering artist so the work is original and true to the tradition rather than a font imitation.
