How to Use the Sobriety Calculator

- Enter your sobriety date, your first full day sober.
- Keep today or pick another date to count up to.
- Optionally enter what you used to spend per week.
- Read your days sober, the years, months and days, and your next milestone.
Enter your sobriety date: the first full day you did not drink or use, sometimes called your clean date. The Count up to date starts as today, so the result shows where you are right now. Change it to any other day to see how much time you will have on a birthday, a holiday or a meeting date.
Tick Count my sobriety date as day 1 if you prefer the way many recovery apps count, where your first sober day is day 1. Leave it unticked to count completed days, so you reach one day sober the morning after your sobriety date. The optional money field takes what you used to spend in a typical week and shows the total you have kept instead.
The result shows your total days sober, the same time in years, months and days, in weeks and in months, your next milestone with a progress bar and a table of recent and upcoming milestones. The calendar button downloads the next dates as an .ics file you can open in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How Sober Time Is Counted
Days are counted between whole calendar dates, so time zones and daylight saving time never shift the total. Months and years use calendar anniversaries: one year after March 14, 2025 is March 14, 2026, whatever the number of days in between.
weeks = floor(days ÷ 7), with the leftover days shown
years, months, days = whole anniversaries passed, then the remaining days
money kept = weekly amount × days ÷ 7
When a monthly anniversary would fall on a date that does not exist, such as the 31st of a 30-day month, it moves to the last day of that month. Day milestones such as 90 days or 1,000 days are simple day counts.
Worked Example
Someone with a sobriety date of March 14, 2025 checks the calculator on October 1, 2026. The count is 566 days. Their one-year anniversary was March 14, 2026 and 18 months came on September 14, 2026, leaving 17 more days, so the time reads 1 year, 6 months, 17 days. That is 80 weeks and 6 days, or about 13,584 hours. At $60 a week, 566 ÷ 7 × $60 is about $4,851 not spent. The next milestone is two years on March 14, 2027, 164 days away. We checked these numbers with a separate date script.
Common Sobriety Milestones
Many recovery groups mark early days often, then months and years. Twelve-step fellowships and other groups give chips, coins or keytags at some of these points, and customs vary by group and country.
| Milestone | Sobriety date Mar 14, 2025 | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | Mar 15, 2025 | Days |
| 30 days | Apr 13, 2025 | Days |
| 90 days | Jun 12, 2025 | Days |
| 6 months | Sep 14, 2025 | Calendar |
| 1 year | Mar 14, 2026 | Calendar |
| 1,000 days | Dec 9, 2027 | Days |
| 5 years | Mar 14, 2030 | Calendar |
Tips for Using Your Count
- Pick the date you and your group use, and keep using it so your anniversaries stay consistent.
- If you need to set a new sobriety date, that is part of many people's recovery. Enter the new date and the calculator starts again from there.
- Use the milestone list to plan something meaningful for the next date, such as a meal with a friend or putting the money kept toward something you want.
- The calendar file adds all-day events, so you get a gentle reminder without needing an app account.
Support
A counter is a tool, not a measure of your worth. If cravings or hard days come, reaching out to someone you trust, a sponsor, a support group or a health professional can help. In Canada you can find free support services through Health Canada's get help page, and the SAMHSA National Helpline serves the United States.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many days I have been sober?
Subtract your sobriety date from today's date. The calculator does this for you and also converts the total into weeks, months and years, so you can see 566 days as 1 year, 6 months and 17 days.
Does my sobriety date count as day one?
It depends on the group or app you use. Some count completed days, so the first full day sober is reached the next morning. Others call the sobriety date day 1. Use the checkbox to switch between them.
What are the common sobriety milestones?
Common markers are 24 hours, 30, 60 and 90 days, 6 and 9 months, one year and every year after that. Some people also celebrate round numbers such as 100, 500 or 1,000 days.
How are months and years counted?
They are calendar anniversaries. Six months after March 14 is September 14, and one year is the next March 14. If a date does not exist in a month, the last day of that month is used.
Is my sobriety information stored anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or saved. If you download the calendar file, it is created on your device and stays there.
Can I see how much money I have saved by not drinking?
Yes. Enter what you used to spend in a typical week. The calculator divides your days sober by seven and multiplies by that amount. Leave the field empty if you would rather not track money.
