How to Use the Sheep Gestation Calculator

- Choose one breeding date, or ram in and out dates for the flock.
- Enter the breeding date.
- Keep 147 days or enter your flock average and breed adjustment.
- Read the lambing date, window and key dates.
If you know when a ewe was bred, for example from a raddle mark or artificial insemination, keep One breeding date and enter it. If the ram ran with the flock, choose Ram in and out dates and enter the day he went in and the day he came out. The calculator then shows when the first and last lambs are due.
The average gestation starts at 147 days. Change it to your flock average if you have one, or use the adjustment box for your breed. Set the lambing window, the number of days either side of the due date you want to watch closely, and a pre-lambing reminder for jobs such as preparing pens or any pre-lambing care your veterinarian recommends.
The result shows the estimated lambing date, the lambing window, the dates to watch for ewes returning to heat, the reminder date and today's progress. The key dates table lists every milestone, and the calendar button saves the upcoming ones as an .ics file.
How the Lambing Date Is Calculated
Sheep carry their lambs for about 147 days on average, close to five months, with most ewes lambing between about 142 and 152 days. The calculator adds the gestation length to the breeding date. With a ram in and out, the first lambs come from ewes bred on the first day and the last from ewes bred on the last day.
lambing window = lambing date ± window days
return to heat check = breeding date + 17 days (and + 34 days)
late pregnancy = last 42 days before lambing
The heat checks use the 17-day average estrous cycle of the ewe. A ram left in for 34 days covers about two cycles, so most ewes that cycle normally get two chances to conceive. Late pregnancy, the last six weeks, is when the lambs grow fastest and when feeding plans usually change.
Worked Example
A ewe is bred on October 15, 2026. Adding 147 days gives Thursday, March 11, 2027. With a 5-day window, expect lambing between March 6 and March 16, 2027. Watch for a return to heat on November 1 and November 18, 2026. Late pregnancy starts on January 28, 2027 and a 28-day reminder falls on February 11, 2027.
For a flock, a ram put in on October 1, 2026 and taken out on November 4, 2026 is with the ewes for 35 days, about 2.1 cycles. The first lambs are due February 25, 2027 and the last March 31, 2027. Ewes that conceived in the first cycle (October 1 to 17) should lamb by March 13, 2027. We verified these dates with a separate script.
| Ram dates | Days with ram | Lambing period (147 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 1 to Nov 4, 2026 | 35 | Feb 25 to Mar 31, 2027 |
| Oct 1 to Oct 17, 2026 | 17 | Feb 25 to Mar 13, 2027 |
| Oct 15, 2026 (single date) | 1 | Mar 11, 2027 |
What Changes Gestation Length
- Breed. Breeds differ by a few days, so a flock average from your own records is the most useful figure.
- Litter size. Ewes carrying twins or triplets often lamb a day or two earlier than ewes with a single lamb.
- Ewe and lamb. Individual ewes vary, and ram lambs may be carried slightly longer.
- Goats. Goats are similar but average about 150 days. Enter 150 as the average gestation to use this calculator for does.
Tips and Limits
- Scanning by ultrasound confirms pregnancy and litter size, which helps you group ewes for feeding.
- Raddle or crayon marks with a color change every 17 days show which cycle each ewe was bred in, so you can predict lambing groups.
- Have pens, colostrum and supplies ready before the window opens, and know when to call your veterinarian.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a sheep pregnant?
About 147 days on average, close to five months. Most ewes lamb between about 142 and 152 days after breeding, and breed and litter size can move the date by a few days.
How do I calculate lambing dates from the ram in date?
Add 147 days to the date the ram went in to find the first lambs, and 147 days to the date he came out to find the last. The calculator does both and adds a window either side.
How long should the ram stay with the ewes?
Many flocks leave the ram in for about two heat cycles, roughly 34 to 35 days, because the average ewe cycle is 17 days. Longer periods spread lambing out over more weeks.
When does a ewe return to heat if she is not pregnant?
About 17 days after breeding, the average length of the ewe's estrous cycle, with a normal range of about 14 to 19 days. Changing raddle color every cycle shows returns clearly.
Can I use this calculator for goats?
Yes. Goats carry for about 150 days on average, so type 150 into the average gestation box. The heat checks still use 17 days, while goats cycle about every 21 days.
Why is late pregnancy marked?
The last six weeks before lambing are when the lambs grow fastest, so many flocks review feeding then. The calculator marks the date so you can plan with your veterinarian or advisor.
