How Compatibility Is Scored
Traditional astrology judges two signs by the angle between them on the zodiac wheel, called the aspect. Signs four apart (trine) share an element, signs two apart (sextile) have friendly elements, signs three apart (square) share a mode but clash in element, and opposite signs share a mode with complementary elements. We turned these traditional ratings into a simple score so you can compare pairs at a glance. The scores are our summary of the tradition, not results of any study.

Worked Example
Leo is sign 4 and Sagittarius is sign 8, so they are four signs apart: a trine. Both are fire signs, Leo is fixed and Sagittarius mutable, and their rulers are the Sun and Jupiter. The score is 90%, the highest in the system. Leo’s other strong matches are Aries (trine, 90%), and Gemini and Libra (sextile, 80%). Leo and Aquarius are opposites, scoring 65%, while Leo with Taurus or Scorpio forms a square and scores 40%.

Element Pairings at a Glance
Every pair of signs falls into one of three element relationships. Same element pairs, such as two water signs, share a basic temperament and form trines or the same sign. Complementary pairs, fire with air and earth with water, form sextiles or oppositions and are described as stimulating each other. The remaining pairs, fire with earth or water and air with earth or water, form squares, semi-sextiles or quincunxes, where astrologers expect more effort and compromise. That is why the score depends on the distance around the wheel: the distance fixes both the element and the mode relationship.
Beyond Sun Signs
Sun signs are only a starting point.
