Zodiac

Mars spends about six weeks in most signs, and up to about seven months in a sign when it turns retrograde, so the birth time rarely changes the result.

How to Use the Mars Sign Calculator

How to use the Mars sign calculator: enter birth date, time and time zone, choose a zodiac
Numbered steps on the Mars Sign Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Enter your birth date.
  2. Enter your birth time, or tick the box if you do not know it.
  3. Choose the UTC offset in force where you were born.
  4. Choose the Western or Vedic zodiac.
  5. Read your Mars sign, degree, retrograde status and sign dates.

Enter your birth date and, if you know it, your birth time and the UTC offset where you were born. Mars moves slowly, usually about half a degree a day, so the time only matters when Mars was changing signs that day. Choose the Western (tropical) zodiac used in most horoscopes, or the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac used in Jyotish, which is currently about 24 degrees behind. The result shows your Mars sign, its degree, whether Mars was retrograde, its traditional dignity, and the dates Mars entered and left that sign, plus a table of every Mars sign change in your birth year.

What Your Mars Sign Means

In astrology, Mars stands for drive, courage, anger, competition and desire: how you go after what you want and how you handle conflict. The sign it occupies is said to color that energy, so Mars in a fire sign is described as direct and fast, Mars in an earth sign as steady and practical, Mars in an air sign as verbal and strategic, and Mars in a water sign as emotional and protective. These interpretations are a cultural tradition for reflection and fun, not scientific descriptions.

How the Position of Mars Is Calculated

The calculator uses the orbital elements published by E. M. Standish of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Keplerian Elements for Approximate Positions of the Major Planets (table valid 1800 to 2050). For Mars and for the Earth it solves Kepler’s equation, converts each orbit to ecliptic coordinates, subtracts the Earth’s position to see Mars from Earth, corrects for the light travel time, and adds precession and nutation to get the position for your birth date.

M = L − ϖ   then solve E − e sin E = M
geocentric λ = atan2(yMars − yEarth, xMars − xEarth) + precession + nutation
Vedic: λsidereal = λ − Lahiri ayanamsa (23.857° at J2000)

To find when Mars entered and left the sign, the calculator steps through the days around your birth and pins down each change of sign by bisection. Retrograde means Mars appeared to move backward against the stars, which happens for about two months every 26 months when Earth overtakes it.

Worked Example

For May 15, 1990 at 08:30 in UTC-04:00, Mars was at 18°20′ Pisces in the tropical zodiac and moving direct. It entered Pisces on April 20, 1990 and moved into Aries on May 31, 1990. In the Vedic zodiac the same position is 24°37′ Aquarius. Later that year Mars entered Gemini on August 31, slipped back into Taurus on December 14 while retrograde and returned to Gemini on January 21, 1991. We compared 300 random dates with the Swiss Ephemeris: the largest difference for Mars was about 0.07°, which is less than three hours of its motion.

Accuracy and Limits

  • Dates from 1800 to 2050 are supported, the range of the JPL table. Sign change times are accurate to within a few hours.
  • If Mars was within a quarter of a degree of a sign boundary, the calculator warns you that the sign could differ between ephemerides.
  • Sign change times in the table are shown in the UTC offset you selected.
  • Without a birth time the calculator uses noon. On a day when Mars changed signs, check both signs and use the one that matches the recorded time.
  • The Vedic option uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian government’s calendar reform committee.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Mars sign?

It is the zodiac sign Mars was in when you were born. Enter your birth date above and the calculator finds it, along with the exact degree and the dates Mars entered and left that sign.

Do I need my birth time to find my Mars sign?

Usually not. Mars moves about half a degree a day, so it stays in a sign for weeks or months. The time only matters if Mars changed signs on your birthday, and the calculator warns you when that happens.

What does Mars represent in astrology?

Mars represents energy, drive, ambition, courage, anger and desire. Astrologers read its sign as the style in which you take action, compete and pursue goals.

Why is my Vedic Mars sign different?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, which is now about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Your Mars often falls one sign earlier in the Vedic system.

What does Mars retrograde in a birth chart mean?

It means Mars appeared to move backward from Earth's point of view when you were born. Astrologers say it turns Mars energy inward or makes it more reflective. It happens roughly every two years.

How long does Mars stay in one sign?

Usually about six to seven weeks. When Mars turns retrograde it can stay in one sign for up to about seven months, as it did in Gemini from August 20, 2022 to March 25, 2023.
