How to Use the Manglik Calculator

- Enter the birth date.
- Enter the birth time, needed for the Lagna.
- Choose the birth city to set coordinates and time zone.
- Pick the house convention, with or without the 2nd house.
- Read the result and Mars's house from each reference.
Enter the birth date, the exact birth time and the birth city. The coordinates and UTC offset fill in automatically, including daylight saving time, or you can choose Other place and type them yourself. If the birth time is unknown, tick the box: the calculator then skips the Lagna and checks from the Moon only.
Choose the house convention. The default counts Mars in houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12, the rule most common in North India. The second option adds the 2nd house, as many South Indian astrologers do. Tick Also check from Venus if your tradition counts Mangal Dosha from Venus as well.
The result shows whether Mangal Dosha is present, a table with Mars's house counted from each reference, Mars's exact sidereal position, your Lagna and Moon sign, and any of the common cancellation rules that apply.
How Mangal Dosha Is Checked
The calculator computes the sidereal positions of Mars, the Moon, Venus and Jupiter with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and the Lagna (ascendant) from the birth time and place. Houses use the whole sign system: the reference sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on.
Mangal Dosha if that house is 1, 4, 7, 8 or 12 (or also 2)
references: Lagna, Moon and optionally Venus
When Mars is in a dosha house from every reference, the dosha is usually called full or strong. From only some references it is often called partial or anshik Manglik. Traditions differ on how much weight each reference carries, so the calculator shows them all.
Worked Example
For a birth in Mumbai on February 3, 1994 at 09:10 IST, the Lagna is Aquarius and the Moon is in Libra. Mars is at 10°53′ Capricorn. Counting from Aquarius, Capricorn is the 12th sign, and counting from Libra it is the 4th, so Mars is in a dosha house from both: Manglik from Lagna and Moon. Mars is also exalted in Capricorn, which many astrologers treat as a cancellation. We checked these positions against the Swiss Ephemeris in Lahiri mode.
| Counted from | Sign | Mars in house | Dosha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Aquarius | 12th | Yes |
| Moon | Libra | 4th | Yes |
Common Cancellation Rules
Classical and modern texts list many exceptions, and astrologers do not agree on all of them. The calculator checks a few of the most widely quoted:
- Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
- Jupiter in the same sign as Mars, or aspecting Mars with its 5th, 7th or 9th sign aspect.
- Both partners being Manglik, which tradition says balances the dosha.
Other rules, such as specific signs in specific houses or the belief that the dosha weakens after age 28, vary between schools and are not applied here.
Accuracy and a Word of Care
- The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so the birth time matters for the Lagna check. The Moon changes sign every two to three days.
- Mars positions are accurate to about 0.1°, so only births within hours of Mars changing sign are borderline.
- Different software may use the Chalit (house cusp) chart instead of whole signs, which can change the house for planets near a cusp.
Mangal Dosha is a traditional belief, not a scientific finding. A dosha result should never be the reason to accept or reject a partner. Many families now treat it as one small part of a wider conversation.
Lagna, Moon and Venus: Which Reference Matters
Classical texts mostly describe the dosha from the Lagna, which represents the body and the self. Counting from the Moon, the mind, is a widespread later practice, and Venus, the natural significator of marriage, is added in some South Indian traditions. Because the three references can disagree, astrologers usually weigh them together and compare both partners' charts before drawing any conclusion. The table in the result lets you see each reference separately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am Manglik?
Find the house of Mars counted from your Lagna and from your Moon sign. If Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, many traditions call you Manglik. Some also include the 2nd house.
What is anshik or partial Manglik?
It usually means Mars is in a dosha house from only one reference, for example from the Moon but not the Lagna. Many astrologers consider this a milder form of Mangal Dosha.
Which houses cause Mangal Dosha?
Most North Indian astrologers use houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 from the Lagna, Moon and sometimes Venus. Many South Indian astrologers add the 2nd house. The calculator lets you choose.
Can Mangal Dosha be canceled?
Tradition lists many exceptions, such as Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, Jupiter with or aspecting Mars, or both partners being Manglik. Astrologers do not agree on every rule.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For the Lagna check, yes, because the Lagna changes about every two hours. Without a time the calculator checks from the Moon only and warns if the Moon changed sign that day.
Does Mangal Dosha end at age 28?
That is a popular belief, but it is not found in every tradition and is not applied here. Astrology is a cultural practice, so please do not base marriage decisions on a dosha result.
