How to Use the Profection Year Calculator

How to use the profection year calculator: enter birth date and rising sign, read the profection year
Numbered steps on the Profection Year Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Choose your rising sign.
  3. Keep today or pick another date.
  4. Read the profected house, sign and lord of the year.

Enter your date of birth and choose your rising sign (ascendant). If you do not know it, the Rising Sign Calculator finds it from your birth time and place. The Profection on date starts as today, so the result shows your current profection year. Change it to see any past or future year.

The result shows the profected house and sign, your lord of the year, your age, the dates the profection year runs, the monthly profection in force and a table of your current 12-year cycle with the sign, ruler and starting date of each year.

How Annual Profections Work

Profections are one of the oldest timing techniques in astrology, described by Hellenistic astrologers such as Vettius Valens in the 2nd century. At birth the profection starts at the rising sign, the 1st house. On each birthday it moves forward one whole sign. After 12 years it returns to the rising sign, so ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and so on are all 1st house years.

age = completed years on the chosen date
profected house = (age mod 12) + 1
profected sign = rising sign + (age mod 12) signs
lord of the year = traditional ruler of the profected sign
monthly profection = profected sign + months since last birthday

Houses are whole signs, the system used in Hellenistic astrology. Rulers are the traditional ones: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.

Worked Example

Someone born on May 15, 1990 with Leo rising checks the date October 1, 2026. They turned 36 on May 15, 2026, and 36 mod 12 = 0, so this is a 1st house year in Leo, ruled by the Sun. The year runs from May 15, 2026 to May 14, 2027. Four monthly steps have passed since the birthday, so the monthly profection is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, until October 14.

With Aries rising, the same person on May 14, 2026 is still 35. 35 mod 12 = 11, so it is a 12th house year in Pisces with Jupiter as lord of the year. We checked these with a separate script.

Astrologers who use profections say the topics of the profected house come forward during the year, and the lord of the year acts as its main time lord. Its condition in your birth chart and its transits during the year are watched most closely.

Tips and Limits

  • Profection years run from birthday to birthday, not January to December.
  • Your rising sign depends on your birth time. If you were born near a sign change, check the time before relying on the result.
  • Some modern astrologers use Pluto, Uranus and Neptune as rulers of Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces. The traditional rulers shown here are standard for profections.
  • Profections are a symbolic technique, not astronomy, and astrology is a tradition rather than a science.

Frequently asked questions

What is a profection year?

It is a year in which one house of your birth chart is highlighted, based on your age. The profection starts at your rising sign at birth and moves forward one sign each birthday, repeating every 12 years.

How do I calculate my profection year?

Take your age in completed years, divide by 12 and keep the remainder. Add 1 to get the house. Count that many signs from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as the 1st house.

What is the lord of the year?

It is the traditional ruling planet of the profected sign. For a year profected to Leo, the Sun is lord of the year. Astrologers watch that planet's transits and natal condition during the year.

When does a profection year start?

On your birthday. The profection year runs from one birthday to the day before the next, so it does not line up with the calendar year.

What are monthly profections?

Within each year the focus moves one more sign forward every month after your birthday. The calculator shows the monthly profection sign and ruler for the date you choose.

Do I need to know my rising sign?

Yes. Profections count from the rising sign, which depends on your birth time and place. Use a rising sign calculator first if you do not know yours.
