How to Use the Karmic Debt Calculator

How to use the karmic debt calculator: enter birth date and name, read the karmic debt numbers
Numbered steps on the Karmic Debt Calculator. Follow them in order.
    1. Enter your date of birth.
    2. Enter your full name at birth to check the name numbers too.
    3. Tick to count Y as a vowel if your tradition does.
    4. Read the karmic debt numbers found and where each appears.

Enter your date of birth and, if you want the full check, your complete name as it appears on your birth certificate. The calculator works out five core numbers of Pythagorean numerology: life path, birthday, expression, soul urge and personality. For each one it shows the total before reduction and every reduction step, then flags any step that passes through 13, 14, 16 or 19.

By default only A, E, I, O and U count as vowels. Some numerologists treat Y as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in Lynn, so you can tick the box to include it. Accented letters are converted to plain letters, and spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored.

How Karmic Debt Numbers Are Found

Numerology reduces totals to a single digit by adding their digits. A karmic debt number is one of the four totals, 13, 14, 16 and 19, that appears just before reaching 4, 5, 7 or 1. It is written with both numbers, such as 13/4, because the reading combines the final digit with the debt it came from.

Life path: month, day and year reduced, added, then reduced
Birthday: the day of birth (13, 14, 16 or 19 is a debt)
Expression: sum of all letters; soul urge: vowels; personality: consonants
    Letters: A J S = 1, B K T = 2, C L U = 3 ... I R = 9

The life path also gets a second check with all eight digits added at once, because some numerologists use that method. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept where they appear in the life path steps.

    Worked Example

    Take a birth on March 14, 1987 and the name Maya Jane Turner. The birthday is 14, a karmic debt of 14/5. The life path reduces the month to 3, the day 14 to 5 and the year 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 to 7, so 3 + 5 + 7 = 15 and then 6, with no debt.

The letters of MAYA JANE TURNER add up to 58, then 13, then 4, so the expression number is 13/4. The vowels A, A, A, E, U and E add to 16, giving a soul urge of 16/7. The consonants add to 42, then 6, with no debt. This chart therefore shows three karmic debt numbers: 13/4, 14/5 and 16/7. We checked the letter sums with a separate script.

    The Four Karmic Debt Numbers

    NumberTraditional theme and lesson
13/4Traditionally linked with taking shortcuts or avoiding effort in the past. The lesson is steady work, focus and finishing what you start.
14/5Traditionally linked with misused freedom or excess. The lesson is moderation, self-control and adapting to change without losing balance.
16/7Traditionally linked with pride and careless love. The lesson is humility, honesty and rebuilding after sudden upheavals.
19/1Traditionally linked with misused power and selfishness. The lesson is independence that still accepts help, and using power fairly.

In numerology books, a karmic debt is described as a lesson carried over from a past life, which shows up as a recurring challenge in this one. A debt in the life path is said to shape the whole life, while a debt in the birthday or name numbers is said to color a particular area.

    Methods Differ

    • Some numerologists reduce each name separately before adding them, which can reveal or hide a debt in the expression number.
    • Some check only the life path and birthday, and treat the name numbers as secondary.
    • Use the name on your birth certificate. Married names and nicknames are read as separate influences in most systems.

Numerology is a traditional belief system, not a science, and karmic debt is a spiritual idea rather than a measurable fact. Treat the results as prompts for reflection on habits you might want to build.

    Frequently asked questions

    What are karmic debt numbers?

They are 13, 14, 16 and 19 when they appear as a total just before a core number is reduced. Numerology reads them as lessons carried from a past life, written as 13/4, 14/5, 16/7 and 19/1.

How do I know if I have a karmic debt?

Calculate your life path, birthday, expression, soul urge and personality numbers and look at the totals before the final reduction. If any of them is 13, 14, 16 or 19, it is a karmic debt.

Is being born on the 13th, 14th, 16th or 19th a karmic debt?

Yes. In numerology the birthday number uses the day of birth directly, so being born on one of those days gives a karmic debt in the birthday number.

Does Y count as a vowel in numerology?

It depends on the school. Many count Y as a vowel only when it sounds like one, as in Lynn or Mary. The calculator treats Y as a consonant unless you tick the vowel box.

Can a karmic debt number be cleared?

Numerology books describe karmic debts as lessons rather than punishments. Working on the theme, such as steady effort for 13/4, is said to ease them over time.

Which name should I use for the expression number?

Most numerologists use the full name on your birth certificate, including middle names. A later or married name can be checked separately as a secondary influence.
