Numbered steps on the Sade Sati Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose to enter birth details or just your Moon sign.
  2. Enter your birth date and time.

  4. Check any date, starting with today.
  5. Read your Sade Sati status, phase dates and Dhaiya.

Sade Sati is counted from your Moon sign (Rashi) in Vedic astrology, so the calculator needs either your birth details or the Moon sign itself. With My birth details, enter the birth date, time and city. The latitude, longitude and UTC offset fill in automatically, including daylight saving time. If you do not know the birth time, tick the box and the calculator uses noon and warns you if the Moon changed sign that day. With My Moon sign, choose your Rashi from the list.

The Check status on date starts as today. The result tells you whether Sade Sati is active on that date and which phase you are in, where Saturn is, the dates of your current or next Sade Sati and any Dhaiya period. The tables list the phases with exact dates, every Sade Sati in your lifetime with your age, and the Dhaiya periods.

How Sade Sati Is Calculated

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. Sade Sati, Hindi for seven and a half, is the time Saturn takes to cross three signs around your natal Moon:

Phase 1 (rising): Saturn in the 12th sign from the Moon
Phase 2 (peak): Saturn in the Moon sign
Phase 3 (setting): Saturn in the 2nd sign from the Moon
Dhaiya: Saturn in the 4th (Kantaka) or 8th (Ashtama) sign

Your Moon sign comes from the Moon's sidereal position at birth: the tropical longitude from Jean Meeus's lunar theory, minus the Lahiri ayanamsa. Saturn's sign changes come from a table of every sidereal Saturn ingress from 1870 to 2130, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and accurate to the minute. When Saturn turns retrograde near a sign boundary, it can leave a sign and come back months later. The calculator keeps each part as a separate row, so a phase may appear twice.

Worked Example

For a birth in Delhi on May 15, 1990 at 08:30 IST, the Moon is at 28°49′ Sagittarius (Dhanu). Sade Sati therefore runs while Saturn is in Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn.

  • The first Sade Sati began before birth, on December 21, 1984, and ended on November 10, 1993, at age 3.
  • The second ran from November 2, 2014 to January 17, 2023, ages 24 to 32.
  • On October 1, 2026, Saturn is in Pisces, the 4th sign from the Moon, so this person is not in Sade Sati but is in Kantaka Shani (a Dhaiya) until February 23, 2028.
  • The next Sade Sati starts on December 11, 2043 and ends on February 25, 2052.

We checked the Moon position and every Saturn ingress against the Swiss Ephemeris in Lahiri mode. Dates are shown in Indian Standard Time.

What Sade Sati Is Said to Bring

In Jyotish tradition, Saturn is the planet of discipline, delay, hard work and karma. Sade Sati is traditionally described as a period of pressure, responsibility and lessons, with the peak phase often said to be the most demanding. Many astrologers also stress that results depend on the whole chart. Saturn well placed for your Lagna, or a Moon sign ruled by Saturn's friends, is said to soften the effects, and many people report achievements during Sade Sati. Common traditional remedies include prayer to Shani or Hanuman, charity on Saturdays and patient, honest work.

Accuracy and Limits

  • The Moon moves about half a degree an hour. If it is near a sign boundary at birth, the birth time decides your Moon sign, and the calculator warns you.
  • Other ayanamsas, such as Raman or Krishnamurti, can move Saturn's ingress dates by a few weeks.
  • Panchang dates may differ by a day because of the time zone or the moment used. Ingresses here are exact to the minute in IST.
  • Astrology is a cultural tradition, not a science. Please do not make health, money or relationship decisions based on a transit.
