How to Use the Mulank Calculator

How to use the Mulank calculator: enter your birth date and read your root number and planet
Numbered steps on the Mulank Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Tick this only if you follow the sunrise day and were born before sunrise.
  3. Read your Mulank, ruling planet and traditional associations.

Enter your date of birth. The calculator takes the day of the month, adds its digits until one digit remains and shows your Mulank with each step. It also lists the planet that rules your number in Indian numerology, the weekday, colors and gemstone traditionally linked with that planet, a table of Mulank numbers for every birth day and your Bhagyank (destiny number) for comparison.

If you were born after midnight but before sunrise, some astrologers count your birth on the previous date, because the Hindu (Vedic) day runs from sunrise to sunrise. Tick the box to use that convention. Most numerologists use the calendar date, so leave it unticked unless you follow that practice.

How the Mulank Is Calculated

Mulank, also called the root number, psychic number or driver number, uses only the day of birth. Single-digit days stand as they are. Two-digit days are reduced by adding the digits, and if the result still has two digits, they are added again.

Mulank = reduce(day of birth) to a single digit from 1 to 9
example: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2

Indian numerology, which draws on the Chaldean tradition and Vedic astrology, links each number from 1 to 9 with one of the nine grahas (planets). Master numbers are not kept, so the answer is always a single digit.

Worked Example

For a birth on May 15, 1990, the day is 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. The Mulank is 6, ruled by Venus (Shukra), traditionally linked with love, beauty, art and comfort. For a birth on May 29, the day reduces 29 → 11 → 2, a Mulank of 2 ruled by the Moon. For someone born at 4:30 a.m. on May 1, before sunrise, the Vedic day convention uses April 30 instead, giving 3 + 0 = 3, ruled by Jupiter. We checked these with a separate script.

Mulank and Bhagyank

Indian numerology uses two main numbers. Mulank comes from the day alone and is said to describe your nature and how others see you. Bhagyank, the destiny or conductor number, comes from the full date and is said to describe the path your life takes. Practitioners often read them together, and some consider certain pairs more harmonious than others, although the pairings differ between books.

A Note on Accuracy

The arithmetic is exact, but numerology is a traditional belief system, not a science. Studies have not found that numbers from birth dates predict personality or events. The planetary traits, colors and gemstones shown here are the associations found in traditional sources, offered for interest and reflection. Please do not buy expensive gemstones or make important decisions based on a number alone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Mulank?

Take the day of the month you were born and add its digits until one digit remains. Someone born on the 15th has 1 + 5 = 6. Someone born on the 29th has 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?

Mulank uses only your birth day and is said to describe your personality. Bhagyank adds every digit of the full date of birth and is said to describe your destiny or life path.

Which planet rules each Mulank?

In Indian numerology 1 is the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. The planet gives each number its traditional traits.

Should I use the previous date if I was born before sunrise?

Some astrologers do, because the Vedic day starts at sunrise rather than midnight. Most numerologists use the calendar date. The calculator lets you choose either convention with one checkbox.

Is Mulank the same as the psychic number or driver number?

Yes. Mulank, root number, psychic number, birth number and driver number are different names for the same single digit taken from your day of birth.

Can my Mulank be 11 or 22?

No. Indian numerology always reduces the Mulank to a single digit from 1 to 9. Master numbers such as 11 and 22 belong to Western numerology methods, so a birth on the 29th gives 2.
