Love Calculator

Type two names to get a playful love compatibility percentage. It is a game, not a prediction: the score comes from a simple formula applied to the letters of both names, so the same pair always gets the same result.

How to Use the Love Calculator

How to use the love calculator: type two names, press Calculate love and read your fun score
Numbered steps on the Love Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Type the first name.
  2. Type the second name.
  3. Press Calculate love to see your score.
  4. Read your love percentage, the message and the letters the names share.

Type your own name in the first box and the name of your crush, partner or favorite celebrity in the second. Then press Calculate love, or hit Enter in either box, to see the result.

The love percentage appears from 0 to 100, with a bar, a short playful message, the shared letters of both names and the letter count of each. Copy result gives a ready line for sharing.

Press Swap names and the score stays exactly the same, because the order of the names never matters. Try first names, full names and nicknames too, since every different spelling produces its own separate score.

What Is a Love Calculator

A love calculator, also called a love tester or love meter, is a name game that turns two names into a percentage. It is pure entertainment, not a real compatibility test of any serious kind.

The idea is much older than the modern internet. Schoolyard games such as FLAMES crossed out matching letters in two names on paper, and early websites simply turned that pencil ritual into an instant number.

Many sites hide how their love number is made, and some even claim accuracy. This page does the opposite: it explains every step of the formula, so you can see exactly why a score appears.

How the Love Score Is Calculated

The calculator is built to be consistent, so the same two names always give the same result, whoever types them and on whatever device. It follows four short steps every time you press the button.

  1. Convert both names to lowercase, strip accents, and remove spaces and anything that is not a letter.
  2. Sort the two cleaned names alphabetically.
  3. Join them into one string and run it through the FNV-1a hash function.
  4. Divide the hash by 101 and keep the remainder as the score.

Accents are stripped out with the standard Unicode normalization, so Zoë and Zoe count as the very same name. Sorting the pair alphabetically is why swapping the boxes can never change the final love score.

The FNV-1a algorithm is a well known, fast method that turns any text into a number that looks random. Taking the remainder after dividing by 101 keeps every whole score between 0 and 100 inclusive.

text = "love|" + first name A to Z + "|" + second name A to Z
hash = FNV-1a 32-bit(text)
score = hash mod 101

Worked Example: Romeo and Juliet

Enter Romeo and Juliet in the two boxes. After cleaning, the names become romeo and juliet. Sorted alphabetically, juliet comes first, so the text passed to the hash is love|juliet|romeo, and the remainder gives 48%.

Type ROMEO and juliet, or put Juliet in the first box, and the score is still 48%. Capital letters, extra spaces and name order are all removed before the hash is calculated, so nothing changes.

Now try their full names, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The score drops to 0%, which shows how sensitive a hash is: adding more letters produces a completely new number, not a slightly different one.

What Your Love Percentage Means

Each score range comes with a playful message rather than a serious verdict. The bands below are the same ones the tool uses, and the message changes only when your score crosses into another band.

ScoreMessage theme
90 to 100%Written in the stars
75 to 89%Strong spark
60 to 74%Plenty of chemistry
45 to 59%Friendship with a little mystery
30 to 44%Could work with patience
15 to 29%Shy names
0 to 14%Opposites attract, sometimes

A match written in the stars or a strong spark is fun to share, but it says nothing real about the couple. Plenty of chemistry at 65% is just as meaningless as a high score.

A low score is not really bad news either. Opposites attract is the message for anything under 15%, and since scores spread evenly across the range, low results appear about as often as high ones.

Why Results Differ Across Sites

Type the same two names into five love calculators and you will likely get five different numbers. Every site uses a different formula, and most never publish it, so results cannot be compared between them.

Some tools count matching letters, some use numerology by adding letter values, and others ask for a date of birth or zodiac sign. Each method is equally arbitrary as a measure of anyone's real feelings.

Within this calculator, spelling is the only thing that really matters here. Jon and John, or a first name and a nickname, are different strings, so they give different scores even for the same person.

Fun Ways to Use the Love Tester

Compare your name with your partner's first name, full name and nickname, then see which version scores highest. Many couples enjoy hunting for the one combination that lands in the top band of the table.

Test famous couples from films, books and history, or use the love calculator as an icebreaker with friends. It also works as a quick party game where everyone guesses the score before pressing the button.

The shared letters row lists every letter found in both names, a nod to the paper games that counted matching letters. It is shown purely for fun, and it does not feed into the percentage.

Privacy and Accuracy

The whole calculation runs locally inside your own browser. The names you type are not stored, logged or sent to any server, so you can test a secret crush without anyone else ever seeing it.

No formula, however clever, can ever measure real compatibility. Lasting relationships depend on communication, kindness, trust, shared values and time together, and none of those qualities can be found in the letters of a name.

Please do not base relationship decisions on this score. Enjoy it as a light moment with someone you really like today, and if a result stings, try a nickname and let the alphabet redeem itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the love calculator accurate?

No. It is a game for fun. The score comes from a hash formula applied to the letters of two names, so it cannot measure real feelings, attraction or long term compatibility.

Why do I always get the same score for the same names?

The score is calculated only from the cleaned names, so the same pair always gives the same percentage. Capital letters, spaces, accents and the order of the names do not change it.

Does the order of the names matter?

No. Both names are sorted alphabetically before the score is calculated, so swapping them, or pressing Swap names, always gives exactly the same result, whichever box each name starts in.

Should I use full names or nicknames?

Use whichever you like. Every spelling is a different input, so first names, full names and nicknames each give their own score. Many people try several versions and keep the one they like best.

Are the names I enter saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and the names are never stored, logged or sent to a server. Closing or refreshing the page clears them completely.

Can I use it for friends or family?

Yes. The formula only looks at letters, so it works with any two names, including friends, siblings, pets or fictional characters. The messages are written for couples but stay lighthearted for everyone.
