How to Use the GPA to Percentage Calculator

How to use the GPA to percentage calculator: choose direction and scale, enter your GPA, read the percentage
Numbered steps on the GPA to Percentage Calculator. Follow them in order.
  1. Choose the direction: GPA to percentage or percentage to GPA.
  2. Pick the grading scale your school uses, or Custom for its own formula.
  3. Enter your GPA, or your percentage if you switched direction.
  4. Read the equivalent percentage and letter grade, then compare other scales in the table.

Choose the direction first: GPA to percentage or percentage to GPA. Then pick the grading scale your school uses. The US 4.0 letter table and the Ontario OMSAS table convert through letter grades. The linear option is a straight proportion with a maximum you choose. The CBSE option multiplies a 10-point CGPA by 9.5. If your school publishes its own formula, choose Custom and enter it as a × GPA + b.

The result shows the equivalent percentage or GPA, the letter grade and the band it falls in, plus a table of the same input on other common scales. That table makes one thing clear: a 3.5 GPA can mean anything from about 80% to almost 90% depending on the scale.

GPA Conversion Formulas

Linear: % = GPA ÷ scale maximum × 100
CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5
Custom: % = a × GPA + b
Letter tables: GPA points map to a letter band, then to that band's percentage range

For letter grade tables, an average GPA such as 3.5 usually sits between two letter grades. The calculator takes the midpoint of each band and draws a straight line between neighboring grades to estimate one percentage. It also shows the two bands so you can see the real range.

Worked Example

A 3.5 GPA on the US 4.0 table sits between B+ (3.3, 87 to 89%) and A− (3.7, 90 to 92%). The band midpoints are 88% and 91%, and 3.5 is halfway between the two GPA points, so the estimate is 89.5%. On the Ontario OMSAS table the same 3.5 sits between B+ (77 to 79%) and A− (80 to 84%), giving 80.0%. A straight linear conversion gives 3.5 ÷ 4 × 100 = 87.5%. A CBSE CGPA of 8.2 converts to 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%.

The OMSAS table also has a D− at 0.7 for 50 to 52%. Ontario universities use percentage cutoffs that are lower than many US schools for the same letter, which is why the same GPA converts to a lower percentage.

Going the other way, a percentage of 85% is a B (3.0) on the US table, an A (3.9) on the OMSAS table and 3.4 on a linear 4.0 scale. Switch the direction at the top of the tool to see these side by side for your own mark.

Why GPA Conversions Vary by Institution

  • Different letter cutoffs. One school's A starts at 93%, another's at 90% or 85%.
  • Different scale maximums. GPAs run to 4.0, 4.3, 4.33, 5.0, 7, 9, 10 or 12 depending on the country and school.
  • Weighted GPAs. Honours and AP courses can push a high school GPA above 4.0, which no letter table can reverse exactly.
  • Official formulas. Some universities print a conversion formula on the transcript. When yours does, use it with the Custom option.

Limits

A GPA averages many courses, so converting it back to one percentage is always an estimate. Admissions offices usually recalculate grades from your transcript using their own tables. Use this calculator to understand roughly where you stand and to compare scales, then confirm with the school before relying on the number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my GPA to a percentage?

Use the table or formula your school publishes. On the common US 4.0 table, a 3.5 GPA is about 89.5%. A simple linear conversion divides by 4 and multiplies by 100, giving 87.5%.

What percentage is a 3.0 GPA?

On the US 4.0 letter table a 3.0 is a B, or 83 to 86%. On the Ontario OMSAS table a 3.0 is also a B, but that band covers 73 to 76%.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

For CBSE, multiply your CGPA by 9.5, so 8.2 becomes 77.9%. Many universities use their own formula instead, so check your transcript and use the Custom option.

Is there a universal GPA to percentage formula?

No. Each school and grading system sets its own letter cutoffs and scale maximum. That is why the calculator offers several common scales and a custom formula.

How do I convert a percentage to a 4.0 GPA?

Find which letter band your percentage falls in on your school's table. On the US table, 85% is a B, which is 3.0. On the OMSAS table, 85% is an A, which is 3.9.

What if my GPA is above 4.0?

A weighted GPA above 4.0 includes honours or AP bonus points, so it cannot be read from a 4.0 table. Use the linear option with a 5.0 maximum as a rough guide.
